Magnetized spool ball bearings?

Post by Fishingelbow » Mon Nov 15, 2021 4:56 pm

Does getting magnetized affect the working of spool ball bearings? I seem to remember a manufacturer(?) writing a warning about this, but that got lost in the fog of my elderly brain. Recently, I dropped a bearing on the magnets of a Daiwa reel while taking it out. After cleaning it, I spun it on a bearing check tool and surprise, at the end of the spin, it now reverses direction for maybe half a turn. My flabber's completely gasted!
Does anybody understand what's going on?

The bearings in a reel are mild stainless 304 if that at best.

Dropping one would demagnetise it to a degree, passing it through a demagnetisor would also do the trick.

However I see no reason slightly magnetic balls doing any harm, as in Daiwa reels they live in an area highly magnetic. And in turn DC reels that's a lot of goings on in there too...

Slazmo to the rescue again! =D>
Many thanks for your help, Slazmo. Apparently, the problem was a magnetized ball bearing; a couple of demagnetizer passes and the ball bearing now spins longer on the tool, without any 'backspin' at the end. Also, a finger flick now produces a spin time of the reel spool that's almost twice the duration it was before demagnetizing.
Of course, this isn't even close to a scientific experiment, but it sure points in the direction of a magnetized bearing. Said bearing had been in direct contact with both Daiwa brake magnets, which is the worst case scenario, as compared to 'close' contact where I believe the square root rule comes into play to rapidly decrease the strength of the magnetic force. What do you think?
Thanks again!

This came up on my memories... But I wouldn't let it all worry you, a little magnetic force...
