flushing/cleaning bearings

Post by Freddie » Sun Jul 03, 2022 10:56 pm

What's the best way to thoroughly clean stainless steel and ceramic bearings?

I use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. I put the bearings into a glass baby food jar, along with acetone, and start it up for a cycle.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

I believe this will be the most common response, though people use various cleaning agents.

be very careful with acetone. i have ruined some high end ZPI ceramic hybrid bearings before as I wasn't aware they used polymer cages to hold the balls in, most bearings use metal cages but be aware there are some that don't and acetone will melt them.

I only use acetone for stock bearings(excluding quantum, because of polymer liner inside the race). I use electronics contact cleaner on expensive bearings. It won't attack plastic in the short-term, but will soften it if you leave it for an extended period of time). Usually, a 2 minute cycle works well enough.

I do use acetone when I clean my Hedgehog AIR / ZPI hybrid bearings.
10-15 minutes flush doesn't do any damage.
Bearings still rotate very well.
