Suppress/silence DC whine?

Post by y2k88 » Sun Jun 04, 2017 5:04 am

This might sound like a question that shouldn't be asked,
but wondering if there is a method to silence or reduce the whine on a DC reel.
I have the Exsence DC.

Sometimes it can draw some unwanted attention...

That is one of the draws of a DC reel  . Sort of comes with the territory. If it is the older model Exscence DC you may try the night mode called "SP". This setting typically as very little to no wine from my experience though there is a slight trade off in casting distance. I have two of these reels I like to use this mode for low light times if I find myself needing to cast straight into a very strong wind.

Trade it for a Metanium. Should fix that issue

Well if it's just a sound module, can look to unsolder it off the circuit.
Maybe the old Scorpion DC didn't have it, hence no whine.

All DC units have the whine. It's designed into the reel. There is no way to eliminate it. I already tried...

Thanks Dan.
Looking at this, it must be one of these components

I'm not game enough to unscrew the DC unit off my Exsence to check it out for myself.
And even if I did, wouldn't know what is what.

Its a expensive piece of equipment. Dont fart around with it - they go bad on their own terms without doing anything to them.

Have done a few Calcutta DC's when they went quiet, thats a $300 job to repair here alone. Some say they cast even better without DC's.

The noise has to be to do with the magnetic inductor / tance while spinning at optimum rpm.

Only way to remove it simply would be the remove the shaft based inductor if possible, quiet sure from memory there is a e-clip there, cant tell if its keyed or glued further?

Ah ok, so it's not sound like we know from a speaker, but like coil whine in a computer?

There is some noise from the unit because of the magnets and discharge like he described. They did add some sound to make it a little louder. I was told they could program other sounds or make them "quiet". I asked for a silent one and the engineer laughed at me. I requested a Godzilla shriek after that and he did not laugh.

The newer I-DC units are completely different from the original DC units. I believe they are using a different magnet and they tend to be louder. My experience with them has been very limited.

Interesting. Thanks for the extra bit of info.

I did see on YouTube where a guy had reprogrammed a '14 scorpion dc to have sound, and then to a little tune.

Do you think they make the JDM models louder? The U.S. Curado DC was much quieter than the JDM 17 Scorpion DC. I was hoping the 2020 Exsence DC SS would be louder since it's JDM.

Keep in mind the Curado DC also has a slightly different DC system than the 17 Scorpion DC (iDC-4 vs iDC-5).

If the units are similar say I-DC 4 vs. I-DC 4 JDM the brake units are the same. The difference is the program inside. This is due to casting styles of US anglers compared to Japanese anglers. The rod styles also tend to be slightly different. Due to this the initial braking force required will be vastly different.

The sound is generated from the magnets and coils in the braking system. The newer units are different than they used to be, especially with I-DC4. There is no way to change or alter the sound. The braking programs and brake setting may alter the sound of the unit, as will your cast.
