Q on a Bantam MGL

Post by lifeofRiley » Tue Jun 01, 2021 10:43 pm

I bought one when they first came out from a shop in Japan. It was making noise every few casts on a trip a month ago. I took it apart and added oil and grease to all the bearings. I also looked at the weird spring in the reel but couldn't make heads or tales of it as it's a new feature not on older model reels. After a light testing it seems the reel is back to being quiet. My question is, does this reel lack a spool bearing in the space under the spool tension knob cap??? There is a bearing under there, but I believe it's the x-ship bearing that the tip of the pinion gear rests in during retrieve. This is part 29 on the JDM schematic. I thought all casting reels with X-ship have two bearing under the knob cap, one for the end of the pinion and one for the end of the spool shaft. Thanks for any info on the subject. The reel functions fine.

The bantam has a duel supported spool, the LH side, RH side behind the wool pin - that silent tune bearing has that spring act on it to keep it placed, the pinion gear is also supported on both sides too.

There is no bearing for the spool under the cast control cap. The X-Ship bearing is the only one there. As Slazmo pointed out, the silent tune feature uses spring to reduce noise and slight vibrations during casting.

Typically any noise from casting will be due to the brakes. They need to be cleaned and lubricated periodically. Apply a light coat of the Bantam oil to the brake pipe (brass tapered ring in the center of the side plate) after it has been cleaned. This will eliminate any noise.

The spool bearing can get noisy too as it is an oil filled bearing. Although this is less common. This is the bearing on the spool shaft. Every once in a while apply one drop of oil to the bearing. Maybe 2-3 times per year depending on how much you use the reel. Clean off any excess and continue fishing.
