So how do I get a new pawl for a 2020 Metanium?

Post by CFDoc » Wed Jun 09, 2021 3:24 pm

I've got a pawl on a 20 Met that's getting a bit sticky and I'd like to get a new one.

Looking at Shimano's parts site, it says the pawl is part BNT5892. However, you can't add this part to a cart because it says it's discontinued.

I noticed it's also listed as discontinued on the Bantam MGL as well.

So does anyone know how to get a new pawl for this reel?

Thanks in advance.

It'll be a common part. Shimano Australia hasn't updated their website for ages so can't pull the cross ref for anything else...

May get flamed for asking - "is it a plastic pawl?"

It's a metal pawl.

I posted on another site and it looks like I just need to call Shimano and they will send me one.

After taking it apart and looking at it, the pawl looks fine. I think my cap just came a little loose.

Due to tolerances, sometimes it is necessary to add a second one of the thin copper washers that sit inside the pawl cap. I've had this happen even on brand new reels.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Funny you mention that.

I have 6 Mets, 4 JDM and 2 USDM. The sticky pawl is on one of my USDM models. I was very careful when removing the pawl and noticed that my USDM model did not have a spacer. Curiosity got the best of me so I took out the line guide on one of my JDMs and I noticed that it did have the spacer.

Curiosity is about to make me take apart all 6 and see what happens...

BNT5892 is a good part number and they are currently on backorder. They are due in next week.

The shims are used to adjust for tolerances due to machining on the pawls and worm shafts or the molding of the line guide. Some may need one, some may need two, some may need none. Typically I want to see a small amount of space, maybe .003" between the end of the line guide and the pawl or spacer. We always need to adjust the shims when replacing the pawl and/or worm shaft. The same is true for the pawl in spinning reels that use a worm shaft for the oscillation.

Too tight is an issue and can cause binding and damage to the worm shaft. The pawl does move slightly up and away from the worm when the direction changes. It is a small amount, but there needs to be some play. Too much play will cause wear issues and also binding. If you go back 20 years the spacer is called "optional" in the schematics because it is used to adjust tolerances. Some reels need them and others do not. Each reel is slightly different.

Sometimes when the factory is assembling the reels the spacers can get stuck to each other and the reel gets one too many. It doesn't happen often but it can and does happen.

Thank you for the information.

I may still order a pawl or two when they come in stock.I already ordered a handful of the copper spacers just to have for the future. However, I believe I have been able to fix everything by adjusting the cap tension on the current setups.

Thanks again though. Very good information.

If anyone needs this hack, a appropriately sized wad punch and some polypropylene type plastic commonly found as food packaging eg: butter containers, ice cream containers etc, these make good spacer shims in varying thicknesses and colours...

If you've ever seen those brass / metal spacer washers under the pawl go green you'll know why plastic is a god send as a bearing surface in that area.

Also another option is using the spinning reel pawl spacer RD1647# from a small high end Shimano spin reel - not all are the same but they are my choice of common pawl spacer to update.

Pic 6. Plastic washer for ref. You can slightly bend the washer too to create a spring tension effect if desired, so that you don't have to use multiple layers.
