Scorpion MGL 150 Roller Clutch Bearing Help

Post by Preston » Tue Jan 11, 2022 11:17 am

So my AR or roller clutch bearing is slipping. Does anyone know which Curado uses the same AR bearing? Or does anyone know a part number available from the US Shimano shop that would work?

I assumed the Curado K would use the same AR bearing. Ordered one from Shimano, and it wasn't even close to the same. That boggled my mind. Part #BNT 5421. I suppose Shimano could have made a mistake and packaged the wrong bearing, or they are truly not the same.

I'm normally decent enough at cleaning and replacing reel parts, but this situation has me feeling dumb.

Thanks for the help.

Preston

The bearing can differ depending on the gear ratio of the reel. The XG for example uses one type, and the others use a different type.

Thank you. This might help. When I read this, I thought no way! Why would gears effect the AR bearing, but I looked it up. You are correct. Two different part numbers. 5421 and 5021.

Try the 150 MGL part numbers?

Not sure that's the ticket. Isn't the Curado MGL 150 a completely different frame from the Curado 200K? And the Curado 200K is the same frame as the Scorpion MGL 150.

No worries. I appreciate the input/recommendation. I don't mind looking into things... if it's gear related.

The change of the bearing is for added strength for the XG. There are more anglers using smaller reels for punching and flipping with heavier braided line. Hard hooksets with the heavier rods and line were taxing the bearing a little more, so we changed the size to make it a little stronger on the XG.

Makes some sense. I genuinely appreciate the information. Thanks for the taking the time to share.

Just want to close the loop here for any future thread readers.

I received the roller bearing from the curado k part bnt 5021 not to be confused with part bnt 5421 used in the non XG models. Part bnt 5021 fit in my scorpion mgl 150 perfectly. Reel feels good and smooth with no slippage.

What's really interesting is roller bearing part bnt 2396(used in the slx line) looked identical to part bnt 5021. I have multiple slx's and extra roller bearings bnt 2396, so I tried them in the scorpion. Although they look the same, they didn't perform the same. Using 2396 made the cranking feel slightly binded up. It was smooth but there was too much resistance. Part bnt 5021 feels right. Cranking is smooth and doesn't feel bound up.

Funny side story and the reason all this happened. I used to fish right handed and crank lefty. Years ago I had an injury to my right arm that made it impossible to hold the rod in my right hand. My options were stop fishing and heal, or switch hands. :D So I taught myself to hold the rod left handed and crank righty. It was miserable, but I managed. Years later I never switched back. The benefits are that I can make all kinds of casts righty or lefty now. The draw back is that I have never been able to stop using my dominate hand on hooksets, so sometimes I pressure the reel handle when setting the hook. Pretty sure this is why I'm hard on roller bearings.
