Shimano 2020 TwinPower spool diameters

Post by dragon1 » Tue Jun 14, 2022 2:39 pm

Hello Bantm1 and TT members, I need help to match a 2020 TwinPower with my Shimano Hard Rocker S83MH spinning rod. I would like a bit larger diameter than the 2500 size.

Would the standard 3000 size have a larger diameter than the 2500, or is it only the line capacity that differs? If the only difference between the 2500 & 3000 is line capacity, is there an option that would be bigger diameter than the 2500/3000 but smaller than the 4000 size?

Thanks in advance.

The 2500 and 3000 share spool sizes, with the 3000 size having a deeper spool. The 4000/5000 sizes will have a larger diameter spool.

That's what I thought, thanks Bantam1...well until Shimano comes out with a "3500" series, the 3000 will have to do.

I doubt we will see a 3500 size reel again. The 3000 spool is already at a minimum for size with line capacity. There would be no room for a decent size drag system if the spool was cut any deeper. The 4000 is where you would want to be if you need more line capacity. The other option is to go with a thinner braided line like Power Pro Maxcuatro to gain some capacity if you want to stick with the smaller frame size.

My reasoning and considerations are actually not due to line capacity, but rather matching the first guide diameter to the diameter of the spool for maximum casting distance and efficiency of the coil through the first guide (stripper guide) placement. Also, larger diameter spools tend to handle all type lines better than smaller diameter spools, although the line lay, stroke, oscillation, and actual application of these designs also affect the real life performance.

I'm leaning towards the 3000MHG as to be able to still generate ~ 34 IPT and having the engine of the 4000 size (for strength and durability), while retaining the better torque of a sub-6 gear ratio.

I want this reel to provide comparable power and strength/durability to my 2013 Certate 2510R-PE (which has the 3000 sized gearbox and 4.8 ratio), but with higher IPT to better handle the many times fast moving river current I fish here in Tennessee. I'm also hoping the longer stroke design and worm gear line lay will provide for same or better casting distance even with a smaller diameter spool vs the 2510R-PE.
