Curado 300K Gear Ratio Question

Post by Ghost » Tue Feb 22, 2022 6:38 am

I'm looking to buying one but not sure if I should get the 6.6:1(35 IPT) or the 4.7:1 (25 IPT) for all around swimbait reel.

I have the 300E it has 28 IPT and the gear ratio is good. Just not sure about this newer 300, seems one gear is too fast and the other is too low. I've picked up a 300K and like the palming better than on the 300E, so reason I am looking at this reel for swimbaits.

I've thought this too and the only other option is the tranx 300 with the 5.8 ratio which is 30" per turn but more expensive. Looking at the schematics the Tranx 5.8 set looks like it would work in the Curado as well and can be obtained for $35-36 from Shimano if you're comfortable swapping parts.

Last Fall I bought a 21 Scorpion MD 300 Monster Drive that is
7.9:1 and 42 inches per turn. That’s a little faster than
the Tranx 300 in the 7.6:1 that is 39 inches per turn.

I thought that would be way too fast but it allows me to
keep the rod steady and do all of the manipulations with the
reel instead of jerking or moving the rod.

I’ve really only used it with a K9 so far, but I like
how easy it is to work the bait with just half a crank.

It’s not an all purpose swimbait reel, it’s definitely
not a good Hudd or soft plastic reel but for bigger
hard baits it works well.

I haven’t caught any giants on it, but everything
I’ve caught has been easy to keep them on top
and grind them in.

I think I paid about $250 for it.
