I understand some of the issues with quality control. Hit or miss in my experience with Gloomis. I continue to buy because I love their actions and performance! I have 4 NRX+ now. Haha

Which models? I like to live through others and their spending habits.
I’m a big finesse guy. I have an 821s nrr, a 782s sjr, and two 902s sjr rods.

can anyone with hands on experience with the NRX 901 and 902 explain which applications they are using for each. I was hoping to get more experience with early season hair jigs for smallmouth, but was always afraid that the length in addition to the light power would make the dragging experience overly whippy (some warned of extreme whippiness, esp. with the 901's). Not having held one, I imagine the 901 (& 902 to a lesser extent) as having almost a moderate action (even though Loomis calls it fast) because of light power, compounded by the 7'6" long length. How far off am I? I'm assuming that 901, as light as it fishes, may be just what you need to get a longer cast, with very light braid to leader, and a very light hair jig, like the 1/32's or maybe even just the 1/16's and up to 1/8. Seems different parts of the country the super light weight jigs seem necessary where others are only using like 3/16's and quarter ounce, obviously depth influencing weights. But seems the coldest water period guys aren't throwing deep, maybe 4-10 fow. So if u r in the super light camp you're probably best with the 901, and if you're in the 3/16, 1/4 and up camp best go with the 902?

I used my 901 for ned rigs, hair jigs and even small jerkbaits up to 1/4oz, while not ideal for jerkbaits at all it worked
while I was river fishing for browns.

The best application I personally have found for the 901 is drop shotting, and I usually drop shot with
a 1/4oz and its amazing...

901 - 1/16 - 1/8 marabou or 1/16 (what us east coast river smallmouth guys call a sled, flutter head w/finesse plastic.

902 - heavier horizontal moving bait rod ie spy baits, small paddle tails or will bomb cast a soft jerkbait

Both keep pig smallmouth pinned in current.

I’ve got both, a couple 872s, 842s Conquest, 902s Conquest

I too have the new NRX+ 902s. It’s a tad softer than the Conquest 902s in action. That said I am loving it for all things finesse. I have used smaller top water, Spy bait , smaller treble hook baits, Ned rig, drop shot, and light wire single hook baits so far. Fast action that loads up deep on a good fish. Never feel out of control though.Fun rod that is very versatile.

Thinking about selling my extra old 893c and getting something to fish 5" senkos/flukes from shore since the extra length on the 893/894 is a hindrance when fishing soft jerkbaits tip down, what would you guys recommend? Thinking the 852c for more of an all around rod that I'm hoping has enough power for good hooksets. Love my 842c for paddle tails in open water but it's underwhelming to say the least for bottom contact in general and around any meaningful structure.

Also, bought a member's extra 821s NRR and paired it with a new Vanquish 2500 SHG. Really amazing combo. Had a couple days throwing 1/10 and 1/15oz ned and another day with weightless 3" sluggos and was really happy with how it fished them compared to my 822s SYR
Is your 893 NRX available

So what's everyone's thoughts on the new NRX+ vs NRX?

Sensitivity, rod weight and balance?

Hey guys,

because my Megabass rods have been breaking left and right, I’m thinking about getting my first Loomis and I mainly do a lot of drop shot for smallies so I’m wondering how much of an increase the sensitivity is on the DSR compared to what I currently use in the Megabass lineup which is a Orochi XX Whipsnake and P5 Windbuster.

Is it worth switching?

Thanks

IMO yes, you will definitely feel quite a bit more sensitivity with the NRX+ compared to the Whipsnake.
I have the Whipsnake and its a sweet rod but when comparing it to my 901s its not really in the same league, not
sure about the Windbuster, I have never tried that rod.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback.
Hopefully someone with a windbuster can chime in

Any NRX is going to be a clear upgrade over an Orochi. The sensitivity delta between an NRX and a P5 is much more marginal, though. (That said, a 2-power NRX is going to be lighter than a Megabass F3.5 like the Windbuster, so the NRX will have more feel by design…)
