New rod help

Post by Bbrotz » Tue Jul 13, 2021 6:23 am

I’m looking for a rod for shakeyheads and 5” senkos. I was wanting to try a Phenix K2 but just realized they only make their spinning rod in a L and ML action. Was kind of bummed when I found that out. Any other recommendations? I was thinking maybe an Nrx 852s

852S would be a good one. Also look at Steez AGS

I used the last generation Steez AGS Medium spinning rod but it felt pretty stiff, almost like it was a power heavier. I was also looking at the alpha angler wrench. Has anyone used that rod and can give some feedback?

Funny you mentioned that. I thought the M F was super powerful too like a MH. The 7-6 is a nice stick but might be too long for the application you are referring to. I think 852S is what you are looking for.

Just a thought, but if you were really set on a K2, they do make their blanks available, so you might consider the custom route... It's a much longer process but you can specify each component of the rod and have the opportunity for a one of a kind. ;)

Well I ended up buying another Steez AGS medium spinning rod. Like I said in my previous post I have had this rod before and it felt more like a MH rod. However I just got it in the mail today and it is nothing like what I remember. It feels way less powerful and has a lot more tip. I’m starting to think someone from Daiwa messed up and either used the wrong blank or mislabeled the first rod I had. Either that or my memory really sucks. I sold that rod to my buddy so I’m gonna visit him one day this week and compare the rods to see.

Is this the black/blue model or the new one you are referring too? I had a medium in the previous version and thought the same thing about the power. Totally felt like a MH. I have the new model in the mail in M F and will see what that one feels like.

Phenix has the medium light production casting rods available. I think a 5" Senko isn't ideal for them though. They fish more like a light.

Yeah it’s the black and blue. I bought it new off a guy on BBC and it doesn’t feel as powerful as I remember it

I just received the new AGS 7 M and it does not have the MH feel to me as the previous gen. Its very crisp and powerful. Light as all get out. I have fished a lot of nice gear through the years and the Steez AGS is very very impressive.
