Nrx+ 872 vs steez 76mml
I want one high end spinning rod to replace a previous generation nrx852s that was stolen
I always felt the 852 was a little too powerful for my preferred spinning applications. I'm looking for a rod a pick up in power where my st croix avid 76mlxf can't handle it, but with a similar lively tip and more ass to drive the hook in for 3/16 shakey heads, tubes, case salty sinking shads, neko rigs, and senkos. Fishing for river smallmouths and in deeper water reservoirs mostly. Which rod would you recommend, and why?

I have no experience with the 872s, but i own a previous generation 76mml and love it. i've used it for neko rigs, shakey heads, senkos, etc and it is absolutely fantastic for all them.

i mean how many rods have "the One" engraved on them?
get the new steez 76 pair it up with something like an exist and be done

Want the short answer? Get both
I have both and there IS some crossover between the 76MML and the NRX 872S, but the tip is a little softer on the 76MML. If you’re looking to drive hooks a little harder the 872S will do it better IMO. I use the 872S for Neds 3/16 and up, finesse swim baits, tubes and heavy drop shot 3/8 and up. The 76MML can do everything the 872S can do BUT it fishes the lighter stuff (1/10 and 1/8 neds) and spy baits better. With that being said the 76MML has a greater weight range in which it performs extremely well, giving it legendary status in my books. BUT, for slightly heavier gauge hooks or applications where I’m not using exposed hooks (like a texas rigged drop shot) the 872S wins.

You want the 76MML. I have owned and handled all the models you mentioned. Order up the 7'-6".

Re: Nrx+ 872 vs steez 76mml
The new Steez AGS 76MML is crisper through the tip and has more backbone than the old one. The first gen 76MML will bend past the stripper guide on a whim, very fun and a good thing for some techniques but also slightly less versatile esp for single hook baits.VAsmallies wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 5:38 ambut with a similar lively tip and more ass to drive the hook in for 3/16 shakey heads, tubes, case salty sinking shads, neko rigs, and senkos. New 76MML is also almost a full oz lighter than the original. I think you'll be very happy with the new "unicorn" esp for those applications you listed.

I have both and I will go against the grain here. I will vote for the NRX. If you’re fishing smaller rivers, I think you’d prefer the shorter rod. 7’6 rods feel cumbersome to me if I’m not fishing offshore.
Re: Nrx+ 872 vs steez 76mml
Agreed. Been prowling smallmouth fishery banks for the last 3 weeks and usually taken both the 761MML and 852. Both are awesome rods, but working a steep bank with fish lurking only a couple feet out (but 8 feet deep) becomes increasingly hard with a semi-noodly 7'6" rod. You're pretty much fishing sideways.HobeyBaker wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 6:51 pmI have both and I will go against the grain here. I will vote for the NRX. That said, the 761 has a wider range indeed. I don't understand people who fish senkos on it (it's too soft for my liking), but I think that's just me. Nobody else seems to mind

Those are both fine but why not a Steez Racing Design 67ML+
Re: Nrx+ 872 vs steez 76mml
Maybe look and talk to Gary about the 7’1” Steez spinning rods
One of these might be an option to consider
What do you mean by lively tip?
I’ve been fishing the 71m a lot lately and love that rod
Similar on power to the 76 but doesn’t have the soft tip.
It’s a great rod and I consider it a better senko or Texas spinning rod than the 76 but still has a wide range
I would think for sure of the of 3 Ags will work just not sure which one

River smallmouth are all that I fish. In gin clear water. The 872 would be a good addition to the 7’6”ML Avid picking up where the ML leaves off to fish a 3/16 plus offering weight and still have enough gas in the tank for 20” or better in current. Fishing the Doah, James etc ?VAsmallies wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 5:38 amI want one high end spinning rod to replace a previous generation nrx852s that was stolen

The 872 is as short as I go (anchored up on wintering holes). This time of year I clear the launch pad with 7’6” Loomis to get out of the spook zone. As you know the longer rods are advantageous for less wedging and keeping more line off the water with drifts.
Happy shopping sir

Re: Nrx+ 872 vs steez 76mml
TravisNY, yes on the James and 'doah. Fish the New River quite a bit too, plus Smith Mountain Lake a a couple other deeper mountain reservoirs. You are right about the extra length coming in handy to launch and keep slack line out of faster water when quarter casting. Doesn't hurt to drive the hooks home in 30' of water either. You've got me thinking maybe I should be adding a NRX+902 to the options. Couldn't figure out what the handle length difference is between the 872, 902, and 76mml. Can anyone help with this? Thanks to all for the info and opinions shared this far!
Edit... Bbates3, what I meant by "lively tip" was a light tip to help send fairly light baits way down range. Which of the, now 3, rods would you think would be the best to launch an unweighted fluke or lightly weighted tube to the next county and still be able to drive the hook home. Braid to fluorocarbon will be used.

Yes sir despite the NY portion of my sign in I was in NY eons ago when this site began. I now reside in WV (15 years) and chew some of the same dirt (water) as you so to speak.
I know from experience that the 902 in NRX or Conquest will absolutely launch a fluke, good size lightly weighted/unweighted paddle tail or tube and still set hooks at a distance. They keep big smallies in current buttoned up really well. The 902 in either will out cast a 872. I like the 901,902 NRX and 902 conquest for summer use and the 872 for those cold water mush bites from October on into winter in the sub 45 degree water temps when longer casts take a backseat to precision on wintering holes. Handle length is minimally different.

I have the 872 and love it! Use mine for throwing tubes up north for smallies an shakey heads here in the south for largemouth. I highly recommend grabbing one.
