Recommend a new finesse spinning rod
Hi, I am looking for a new rod for ned rigs, drops shots, and neko rigs. Budget between 300-500$. The more versatile the rod the better. So far I've looked at the NRX+ 822s, daiwa steez ags, and megabass p5 landsat. Anymore suggestions would be helpful thanks!
Re: Recommend a new finesse spinning rod
On the NRX I'd go for the 852 over the 822 models to cover that range of applications. The 822DSR will be better at dropshotting, but IMO it's not a great neko rod. The 761MML Steez will do all three applications well, and is crazy versatile in general. Haven't fished the Landsat. I'd have put the Phenix K2 on the table, but IMO you'd want the 713 for dropshotting and Ned and the 714 for Nekos, so that isn't a one-size-fits-all.

Appreciate the feedback, I do have a k2 ML bait casting, excellent rod indeed. A lot of people have been praising the new daiwa steez, however I don't know why, but I just don't love the styling choice.Drakestar wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 5:53 pmOn the NRX I'd go for the 852 over the 822 models to cover that range of applications. I would take a hard look at the new Steez AGS 71ML. I got this one recently and absolutely love it for the techniques you describe. I also have the 76MML but if you’re looking for something shorter the 71ML is amazing. I was out last weekend smallmouth fishing and the 71ML can handle the big ones no problem.

The 822 DSR is a pretty specialized stick. It excels at open water drop shotting, but I wouldn't use it for Neko or wacky rigged Senkos. I'd look into a 872 NRX if you are looking for something as an all around rod. The 852 has too stiff of a tip for me to drop shot whereas the 872 has a softer tip.

What this guy said, AGS 71ML. I have a NRX+ 852 and a MB Addermine as well, the Addermine and AGS 71ML are kind of tied at this point for what I use now, NRX+ sits in rod locker until I just need it to have something extra tied on...jpmoney wrote: ↑Fri Sep 24, 2021 6:46 amI would take a hard look at the new Steez AGS 71ML. Thanks, i'll probably put the ags at the top of the list now. Too many positive feedbacks compared to the new NRXs....
Re: Recommend a new finesse spinning rod
i just got my 761 steez ags (7'6" mml) and just playing in the basement i think its going to be an awesome rod, weighs 3.5oz and with a 2017 steez type 2 (2500 size) total combo weight was 9.9oz, crazy light for a 7'6" rod imo. i dont know when ill get it out on the water but i cant wait to try it for sure!
Re: Recommend a new finesse spinning rod
Personally that’s different rods for each application. But I only fish smallmouth and have a lot of NRX/Conquest spins.
Overall combo weight is great on paper. Hooked up with 5lb or better smallies in current I take more into consideration given each application. I buy combos for specific baits rather than versatile which to me equates to perfect for none. There is no “the one” for many that predominantly fish a lot of applications on spins. I recently was honored to get interviewed as one of the top smallmouth anglers in the country and delved further into rod selection during it. I’ve went through a lot of sticks. Like most on here.
Hobey and I tend to have similar spin views. Though we differ on reels but I don’t hold that against him.
Happy shopping sir. Good fishing.

+1 on either the 7'1 or 7'6" Compile X AGS
Re: Recommend a new finesse spinning rod
I would have to ask how much lead was being used on the “neds”/hook size and what depths being fished. Vertically dropping on fish or dragging a drop shot (how much weight being used there). That stuff would be a consideration at least for me.

I like my St. Croix mlxf 6'10" legend elite soft tip but pretty solid backbone that it goes quickly into.clemsondds wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 1:35 pmHey, just curuios what you ended up getting??
