Topwater Walking Bait Rod

Post by CodyNeely11 » Thu Nov 25, 2021 7:44 am

Happy Thanksgiving all!

I am needing help on a top water rod. I primarily throw walking baits from 1/2 oz to 1 oz. Is there a rod out there that can handle this range of baits? id really like to avoid having 2 rods for this.

Thanks!

Do you have a length preference?
I just got the MB P5 Mad Bull in anticipation of walking topwaters, as well as other techniques. I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet (and our topwater bite is over), but based on some reports I have high hopes!

I’d like to have something 7’2 or under. Mad bull is something I need to look into!

Megabass US Destroyer Otomat, it is discontinued but it is designed specifically for topwater. I have one and it is incredible, the only thing keeping it from being the perfect topwater rod in my opinion is the length. I like shorter rods for topwater.

Anyone know how parabolic the Daiwa Rebellion 610MHRB is? Thinking this rod may be perfect.

Can the otomat handle 1 oz baits?

I have the 610MHRB but have barely fished it. Haven't tried any topwater on it either. I will say when bending it it seems more on the MOD FAST side of the spectrum. Not sure I would describe it as a parabolic action rod. Take what I say with a grain of salt because I'm relatively unexperienced at evaluating action on rods.

It can handle 1 oz baits but that is definitely pushing the rod.

Dobyns 705cb will work for that range of lures. Not perfectly, but acceptably.

Dobyns Champion 734C is my rod of choice for this range of topwaters.
