Glass crankbait stick for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits?
Glass crankbait stick for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits?
I have a $155 BPS gift card and was eying the SLX DC when I noticed there is an SLX DC glass crankbait rod too. I kind of want to try out a glass rod and DC reel for chatterbaits and spinnerbaits before jumping off the deep end on a MH Valkaryie and Antares DC. The fact that it will only cost me $130 out of pocket is appealing but I don't want to get stuck with a rod and reel I wont use once I replace it. I guess it could be a squarebill rod if it really sucks for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits.
My only concern is the casting performance. The MH SLX glass is only rated up to 3/4 oz which is what my 72M gen 1 Zodias is rated at and it feels overwhelmed casting and retrieving a 3/8 chatterbait and trailer. I have a MH diesel glass stick too that I like but even that stick something that weighs 5/8 oz feels like it overwhelms that rod on the cast and I don't get the distance I want throwing anything heavier than a 1/2 oz trap.
I do like braid and glass for moving baits. I can rip baits out of grass better than with flouro and graphite.

I like a slower graphite rod with braid for chatterbaits. I currently use (dont laugh) a BPS Fish Eagle 7' 2 pc MH. I wont complain because it just plain works. Its significantly lighter than any glass or hybrid rod I've used, as well. My only gripe is that the rear grip could stand to be an inch longer, but that's a minor gripe based on the rods performance vs cost ($70, I think). A nice bonus is that the rod is actually fairly sensitive, as well, which is why it stays stashed in the Xterra.

Also what is everyone's opinion of DC reels and spinnerbaits? Sounds like they could handle wind well.

i like slower action rods for spinnerbaits. back in the old bfhp days, there was a custom builder that praised the seeker s glass blank for any & all moving baits. i can't remember what his name is, but i believe he helped design that blank.
back to the story, at that time i had always used mh fast action rods. i had a 7' mh daiwa tds crank rod and decided to give it a try. i really like the way it hooked and handled fish with a spinnerbait. it seemed like the hook would just pierce the fish instead of ripping a hole in it.
i use graphite rods for both spinnerbaits and cranks now, but i always try use something on the slower side that bends deep.

Same here, since both are single-hook moving baits. I don’t feel like an actual glass crank rod drives the hook well enough. Graphite CB rods (Powell Endurance 725 for me) have that slower action but aren’t as noodley.hoohoorjoo wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 1:39 pmI like a slower graphite rod with braid for chatterbaits.
