What is your rod for tiny cranks ?

Post by KP Duty » Sat Jul 16, 2022 12:18 pm

I have a p5 Kasumi 611 that is great for 1/4oz, but want something that will load nicely for 1/8oz or even 1/10oz. I initially thought I would go spinning...like the p5 baby pluggin' or Poison Glorious 6'8" UL/ML-G. However, I started thinking that I may not like cranking with a spinning reel, and maybe a bfs rod would be better. What say you?

How long of a length are you wanting?

Yamaga Blanks has both a Blue Current 82B (8'2" 2-piece) and 69B that will easily cast 1/8 oz cranks with the proper BFS reel and line set up.

I use the Smith Limited Tourer V-Spec TVC-69ML Bait Finesse Advance to present the 1/8oz Evergreen Little Max early in the season when there's faster current in the flowages, I fish in NW Wisconsin due to snow melt. I prefer casting gear for crankbaits and vibrating baits as much of my fishing is along undercut banks where the current brings food to the smallmouth bass and casting accuracy and control is at a premium. In addition, I catch lots of white bass, walleye, and sauger as incidental catches because everything is trying to stay out of the faster current while trying to feed up for the spawn at that time of year.

I used to use the P5 Kasumi 611, but I prefer having the softer tip on the Smith LTD BFS rod which loads up better to cast these diminutive lures in my fishing experience and helps with keeping the fish pinned with those little #8 double hooks.

Good luck on your rod search for tiny cranks!

Please have a great day!

Thanks for the suggestions. Was looking this morning at the p5 mushizao siglett, which is an F0 6'6" 3/32-1/4oz), with a taper listrd as x-fast-slow (solid tip). Anybody here have this rod?

Custom 7' Rainshadow Immortal "0" power popping blank. Spiral wrapped with Fuji Titanium SiC micros and Matagi handle assembly.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

I also use a ML custom, built on an MHX High mod popping blank. Also recently acquired a 6'10 ML Abu Garcia Fantasista Regista that I believe Tim has likely also used for small cranks. Unfortunately, I don't do much crankbait fishing these days.

Mine is actually ultralight power, rated 1/64 to 1/4. Realistically, 1/32 is doable with the rod and the SS Air that sits on it.

I found a rod in a line I've wanted to try....a 7' L (1.8-10.5g) bait finesse special Fenwick Aces. It seems to have a little more power than the siglett. I think I'll order both.

Friggin' Tiemco/JDM Fenwick Aces and Golden Wing are spectacular rods. Make sure it's not the LP+J model, I have a 6'10" light Golden Wing LP+J, it is too fast and stiff for tiny cranks IMO...neds, light plastics, single hook grubs, finesse jigs, 1/4-5/16 Topwaters, it rocks.

I may go 6'6". I don't know why it sounds short. It's like 6-6" is the new 6'.

It may work with a stretchy line and it will cast 1/16 fine, but those smaller trebles are likely to get pulled out with this taper. If you are fishing single hooks on these tiny cranks, I think that would hold better with the LP+J.

Look up that Yamaga Blanks Blue Current III 69B, it would be a fun little rod for smaller cranks.

Here is a video, although in Japanese and subtitles in Japanese (?).

https://m.youtube.com/watch?time_contin ... e=emb_logo

From my understanding as well, Yamaga Blanks is one of the few remaining brands that essentially manufactures their own blanks, and assembled in Japan with Japanese components.

He does get his arse handed to him with the last fish hooked up in this video...it never did show him landing it, and my guess is that the Alde BFS ran out of line and/or the fish got off or broke off.
