I'm a big fan of fishing a jerk bait. I find I need two styles of rods for this application. One, a short casting rod with a nice moderate flex but a responsive blank. My current favorite is the Megabass JDM P5 F4-65X Oneten Stick. This "Japan Style" jerk bait rod simply gets it done when I want to work my bait faster and more erratically. I prefer the shorter casting rod for the harder downward snapping I like with a more aggressive presentation.

The other, completely opposite end of the spectrum is the Steez AGS 76MML "The One". When the water is cold, and I'm looking to get into deeper water with a Vision 110+1 or +2, this is the rod I pick up. Paired with a Certate LT 3000CXH and sinking braid, I get incredible distance, control, and depth out of my jerk baits. I won't hesitate to fish a 110JR on this set up when necessary.

I 2nd this. This rod is awesome for jerkbaits...especially bigger ones. Gary, did you ever try the gen one with jerkbaits?

Which sinking braid do you use?

Yes i fished jerk baits on the blue Gen 1 76MML a lot, and I still do from time to time. I prefer the Gen 2 red "The One" for larger jerk baits like the 110+2 over the Gen 1.

YGK SS112. It has been out of stock for over a year now, so I'm beginning to lose hope it will be back despite assurances otherwise. Fortunately, I stocked up a bit on it because of its performance characteristics. I haven't found anything better.

How can you work the bait with a 7'6"?

I tried to fish a 6'10" and was tip in the water a lot. Hated having to twitch sideways...it is uncomfortable for me.

Yes sideways is the only way to get it done and generally in that cold clear water using the 110+2, I'm not frantically working the bait, it's a much slower cadence. I don't have a problem though when I do want to rip the bait a little harder, and that braid really helps.

I always fish jerkbaits sideways. To me it works better and is way more comfortable. Especially if you are shore fishing or in a kayak. A 7-6 will cast baits a mile!
