I was using 30lb j braid with 8lb mono leader. I need to swap to a thinner braid just haven't got a chance to research a good braid yet.

I hear you there. I'm going to be searching for a great 10-15 long distance braid for my spinners this spring, and ~ 20 for my ML-M baitcasters as well. I really like Tufline Domin8 in 20 as an all purpose, granted it's a bit thicker diameter, I like it better than X9 or SS8 V2.

I'll probably go with Sufix Nanobraid 12lb for my Kage 7'0" med, and 14lb for my MH+ Shimano Hard Rocker 8'3".

I also want to try the Phenix Rods 20lb braid for my lighter swimjig and paddletail work on my BCs.

If you can wait for a sale on a Dobyns, then I would recommend the Dobyns Champion Extreme 742c. This would be a perfect rod for your application and what I use mine for--well, not speckled trout, but for 1/8 oz ball heads.
That's very intriguing. Does Dobyns have anything akin to the 7'6" MLM or ML+ Steez or ALX McSmalls in spinning?
There is the Xtasy 752 or 753 in the spinning line. Or if sensitivity isn't that paramount and action is more important, then the Champion XP line has the 762 and 792 in spinning.
