Suggestions for a Casting Dropshot Rod

Post by Junk Fisherman » Sun Jan 29, 2023 6:47 am

Looking to upgrade from my Dobyns HP 742c with something high-end along the lines of a Destroyer, GLX/NRX, or Steez. I do a lot of pitching breakwalls which is why I use a baitcasting setup for dropshots. I'll be putting my Curado 70 on the rod. A 3/8th oz sinker is what I use 80% of the time. Thanks for any help.

With your sinker weight, the NRX 852C is my first thought 🤔

Up here on the shores of the St Lawrence I use baitcasters for drop shotting exclusively. Everyone can pick their poison but the advantages associated with a baitcaster made more sense to me. Pitching to cruising smallies as you described is just more precise with a casting reel. The thumb-controllable drag is also better at protecting light lines or leader knot connections. Lastly the elimination of reel induced line twist is also a big plus.

The following rods are in my DS aresenal and serve as complimnetary tools.

NRX JWR852C
NRX MBR842C
GLX JWR892C

All of these reels are paired with Aldeberans.

The MBR842c with the slower action would likely be my first recommendation as I feel it is the more universal tool. That said I tend to fish the 7'6" GLX 90% of the time. Given the current on the St Lawrence and the trophy sized smallies, the longer more powerful rod is the better stick. Efficiency encourages us to use 3/4oz - 1oz sinkers which work perfectly with the 892GLX.

Hope this helps,

Thanks fellas for the suggestions. That 892 sounds good about what I'm looking for. I like longer rods. I already have a 843 GLX and I absolutely love it. I'll have to see if I can find a 892 locally.

I use my Phenix K2 713 ML for BFS dropshotting. Only 7'1", but if you want to look outside the G Loomis lineup it's a great option IMO. I have the NRX+ 852C as well and would prefer the K2 for dropshotting (852 is too heavy for me until it's deep water DS).

The GLX 852c JWR has a nice soft tip, and would make a nice drop shot rod.
