Deep cranking rod

Post by Craiger12 » Tue Apr 25, 2023 5:24 am

What rods are you guys deep cranking with? I'm looking to pick up a rod for deep cranking this summer/fall that will handle baits in the 3/4-1.25 oz range like the DD22, Deep-Six, Little John DD, and the Duo G87 20A. Not interested in throwing any of the larger hard pulling magnum cranks so I don't need a monster stick. Would prefer to keep it under 7'6" and full carbon, not glass or composite.

I just got the Evergreen International Wild Shooter for just this technique, larger but not oversized hard baits. I gave a lot of thought and research. Not overly expensive either.

Thanks for the suggestion. I should specify that I'm looking for something in the 7'4 "-7'6" range.

Yeah, I think I would have preferred a 7'4" or so for easier 2 handed casting. The Daiwa 7'2"-7'6" are rated to 2 oz, which I think is a bit of a strain.

Which Daiwa rods are you referring to?

How about this one:
https://www.depsweb.co.jp/product/sidew ... HGC-77XSGP

BAIT CASTING model
Length:7’7” 1piece
Lure Weight:3/8~2oz
Line:12~30lb
Action:X-Heavy Slow Taper
Grip Length: 440mm (Grip removable)
Dead weight: Approx. 185g
Price: ¥58,300(¥53,000 excluding tax)
JAN code:4544565173091
2012.9 release.
A slow-taper long rod made of medium-elastic 24t and ultra-high-modulus 40t graphite that is applied reliably with a bat while having a stickiness that firmly noses the bite from the tip to the berry.
The tip response, which follows the movement of the bass even after hanging, not only brings the best feeling to the swimbait, which is easy to play and break up, but also reduces the miss bite in the ultra-fast pull of the spinnerbait that induces reaction bites and deep cranking and brings it to the bite.
A power moving rod that supports search baits such as vibration from the shore and buzzbait long throws at a high level.

* Specification changed to Torseitling from June 2022 shipment
I bought it but I have not yet used it. I'll however use it a lot in May :big grin:
Anyway, I'm very impressed with the rod. It has that deadly feel to it. Right mix of action, graphite and power with great ergonomics.
Plus, if you change your mind and wish to go for the 2oz baits, this is the rod.
And you can always trim it to 7'6"

PS: The latest production model comes with proper fuji torzite guides.

Seems like a little too much rod for what I'm looking to do, but I'd definitely be interested in hearing how it works out for you next month. What baits do you plan to throw with it?

I think the Daiwa BLX 7'4" MH Limber Graphite should work as well.

Unless you want higher end than a BLX.

That rod is definitely on my radar. Certainly don't need higher end than that for a cranking rod.

Yeppers, I think the BLX is a way under the radar high quality rod series.

Agreed. There are a few models in that series that are extremely impressive, others not so much  . The 74MHRB is such a great 1/2 oz vibrating jig rod, I sometimes forget how good it handles non "Mag" deep cranks like the Deep Six, 6XD, etc. I tied on a Deep Six today and cast it around as a reminder.

I'll be using it with Deps DC300 up to O.S.P Blitz Magnum EX-DR plus 1oz to 2oz Spinnerbaits.
It is paired with a Steez A TW HLC with 12lb Toray FC.
I really want to see if the Blitz Magnum gets to the 9.5m (+30').

Man, I'd be a little nervous with 1-2 oz spinnerbaits and a Blitz Magnum with only 12lb fluoro...unless it's mostly open water.

You like your Steez A TW HLC? Had first trip out the other day and it's exactly what I was looking for.
