Chatterbait reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Whichever reel you choose, try and pick one with brass gears, for a smoother retrieve, and two bearings in each knob, so you won't feel anything on the retrieve but the blade vibrating.

SV103XS is definitely #1

Lews tourney pro was decent if you can’t find one.

I use a calcutta 100d.
Its got a 5.9:1 gears.
I want to try the Bantam MGL PG or the Engetsu 100PG.
I like a slower gear so I can run it deeper.

Couldn't you just reel it slower?

Prefer true low ratio for resistance baits. Not a fan of the ultra high gear ratio craze. What a world we are living in when 6.3:1 is considered a low ratio. [-(

Prefer the lower gears.
More torque when retrieving and less resistance.

I understand that. It makes sense.
I have a bunch of 7.0/1 baitcasters that I use for just about everything, including punching.
For moving baits, I usually reel just fast enough to feel the crank wiggle, or the chatterbait shake, or the blades on the spinnerbait turn. When I want to speed up, I do it by feel.
I've always done it that way, so I guess I'm just too old to change.
