Steez Gear Mods

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Wait, "SV103" as in TD Zillion gears and drag stack fit the old Steez LTD and I assume SS SV103 reels? I guess this makes sense. I always wondered what the doner reels for the brass gear conversion came from.
Partially correct; the SV103 built on the og Zillion frame. That will work, but you have to use the stock steez pinion and the og Zillion brass drive gear. The main zillion/SV103 gear also has to be the same gear ratio as the stock Steez pinion in order to work. Regarding an entire gear set being interchangeable, I mean the same as in the only gen Steez with the SV spool, before the t-wing came into play. This is the exact same frame as the 1st-gen 2006 Steez SH (7.1) reel. Those gears sets are fully interchangeable.
Thanks so much for the reply :D So that means:

1) Everything that shares frame/gears with SS SV/Steez LTD, can swap gears with the og Zillions drive gear but needs the steez pinion ( same ratio )

2) Only Steez SV ( orange color JDM ver I assume because the USDM 103 looks different ) gears swap directly swap with Steez SH 7.1

Is that correct?
The steez sv with the orange spool is a bit of a 🦄.
iirc, it is built on the og steez h/ha frame, not the steez sh/sha frame, so it's 6.3 gears only for that one. The larger sh/sha gears don't fit into it.
Oh! I see, so which is the one interchangeable with the Steez SH (7.1)? Because it seems like the SS SV gears do not fit it either. Which makes it seem like the Steez SH has a different gear set altogether. :-k
I've swapped steez sha gears directly between an ss sv before with no problems. I actually made a 5.4 gear steez with red accents for cranking small to mid-size cranks by putting ss sv gears into it.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Interesting, because my Steez SHL 7.1 here. Cannot swap gears with my SV Light/SS Air 8.1 which I assume uses the same frame as the SS SV. So is it like a gear ratio thing or is the SHL and SHA not the same after all (been finding online forever for the comparison haha). Here are some pics to clear things up. Really appreciate for helping man!

Is it fair to assume that only Zaion side plate old Steez have interchangeable 8:1 gears with other Zaion side plate Steez? This is the change that coincided with the increase in the frame gearbox diameter? Both old magnesium side plate and later Zaion sideplate reels have interchangeable gears but only on slower, smaller diameter main gears with pinion.

I think so far these are my findings and summary of this thread, please correct me if I am wrong.

1) SV Light, SS Air, SS SV, Steez Namiki, Steez Limited SV (non TW), Steez EX, Steez SV (non TW, USDM), Steez SHA. All share the same gears/sideplates.
( Interchangeable with old zillions but needs steez pinion with same ratio )

2) Steez H/HL ( interchangeable with TDZ )

Only one left is the Steez 100SHL/SH(JDM) and Steez SV (non TW, JDM)

This is interesting if it really is the case because this would make gear swapping even more specific.. hopefully someone has all the reels of the different ratios to do a comparison haahhaha.

There is also the Megabass IS reels which come is a number of 7 gear ratios including a 7.9:1 with the IS79 yet all have magnesium side plates. Are these the older small gear box steez or did Megabass pull off some Megabass tweaking?

A little update on latest findings:

1) SV Light, SS Air, SS SV, Steez Namiki, Steez Limited SV (non TW), Steez EX, Steez SV (non TW, USDM), Steez SHA(USDM). All share the same gears/sideplates.
( Interchangeable with old zillions but needs steez pinion with same ratio )

2) Steez H/HL ( interchangeable with TDZ ) ,Steez SV (non TW orange, JDM), IS63, IS71, Steez 100SHL/SH(JDM)
All interchangeable.

These are all based on findings online and social media groups so please correct if there are any mistakes. (still do not know if there are differences between L and R models) 🙏

Gonna kick this dead horse and respond to the early comment that OG Fuego gears can work in the OG Steez HL? Is this true?

Anything over 7.1 is the bigger gearbox. I'm pretty sure the part of the frame above the levelwind has an extra slot of porting differentiating the two frames. The OG, smaller frame only has one slot there.

Yes, those are the same gear sizes as the OG Steez, TD-Z, and TD-Z US Trail.

Thought I'd add that I also purchased a modded Steez EX from Spankey a few years ago, it had OG Zillion 7.1 brass, and I suppose, a 7.1 Steez SH pinion, along with a host of other mods and tuning.

It fished and worked just fine.
