Is the Metanium MGL 150/151 the same reel as the JDM Metanium 20? Or are there (potentially minor) differences like with the new Zillion?

Thanks all!

I know of a couple items: The spool is shallower on the JDM model and the handle paddles are a little smaller. I just received mine so I haven't taken them apart or even spooled them yet so others can can add more info. To the best of my knowledge the internals are the same, but I can say that with certainty.

For me, I like the shallower JDM spool, but I prefer the handle on the USDM more. The nice thing about the JDM model is they can be purchased for around $300 and it is cheaper to buy a USDM handle than a JDM spool. I bought a USDM handle for $20 (second hand).

Good Luck and tight lines.

JDM has shallower spool and thinner knobs, only difference.

I personally like the thinner knobs myself, I did however order two bantam handles that are longer for both of my
JDM Metaniums.

JDM handles are shorter (84mm I believe) on the 6.2 and 7.1 reels. The XG gets the 90 mm handle on the JDM model.

Ive had both models for a year now with a lot of hours on the water. The JDM spool is much better IMO. Buying JDM and then swapping handles is what I’d do if I were shopping.

To someone with on the water experience with these reels, what is the difference in cast-ability? I would be using 20 lb braid to leader throwing 1/2 cranks mostly.

Braid casting is probably where I saw the largest difference between JDM and USDM spools.

The USDM spool will hold a ton of 20 lb braid. And with the narrow/deep geometry of the USDM spool, it will create a lot of friction and overall larger outer mass distribution that will make for shorter casts compared to the USDM spool.

It’s hard to explain but it’s like you’ll be able to ‘feel’ the friction that the USDM spool is trying to overcome. And you’ll hear that braid rubbing sound.

Like I said earlier, I much preferred the JDM spool.

Jdm
Shorter handle (84mm)
Slightly shallow spool
** different spool brake weight (small white shoes)

I had the opposite encounter - I feel like the us version spool casted better than the jdm spool.

I def had to put out a third brake on the jdm I order to cast

I can use two with the us spool on most anything.

I have to put the third brake on most light baits on the JDM spool as well. I also only needed two brakes on the USDM spool.

This is because the more line capacity on the USDM spool increases the mass moment of inertia of the spool. Early in the cast it can maintain a slower spool speed, not over run, and be fine with less brakes. However the middle and end of the cast are shortened due to the increased friction and inertial properties of the USDM spool.

I did a good bit of side by side testing. For me, the JDM was almost always better regarding distance. As the weights got close to 0.5 ounces and higher it was less noticeable.

Finally, if you have any JDM spools for sale, I’d like to offer to buy them.

Just sold my last two. I guess it comes down to the size of lure you throw. The brakes on the jdm were a slightly different color if I remember correctly. My tests were mostly with 1/4 oz shaky head worms. I felt like the us version was much less likely to fluff up on the cast.

Sorry to bump this up but I'm trying to find out the weight of the JDM Metanium 20 spool.

13.8g for the Jdm and 14.2g for the Usdm. Just got 1 more of each, so no line on the spool yet. 1st Usdm Met20 for me, will see if i like it more or not. I too prefer the thinner knobs on the jdm. And the 5mm shorter handle on the Jdm HG's feel better in my hands too, weird but it does lol.

Perfect, thanks.

So the Yumeya shallow spool actually weighs more then the JDM version spool... :-s

That is WITH a bearing right? I thought the Metanium spools were a bit lighter than that...
