Shimano 18 Antares MD DC

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Shimano 18 Antares MD DC

Post by Slazmo » Wed Mar 10, 2021 10:09 pm

I've had a reel in limbo for the last few months with Covid affecting progress with parts from Japan and some back ordering which has just come good.

I've had to swap a fair few costly parts out of the reel - more than that I would've bothered with myself to make this thing chooch again.

Water has seemed to flood in and sit, its attacked the MG so voraciously in certain areas the oy reel I've seen as bad is an old FD Stella (vintage and really worked hard without care).

So upon rebuilding and putting parts in places with comparing parts to ensure they're right - even so that they're the same part I noticed this gap at the level wind...

And I wonder why it was so corroded inside... :-k

The money you pay for such a reel and it's got Lada style panel fitment quality control.

Not an isolated case it seems. Stolen image of IG.

Buyer beware I guess.

I would've sent it in to be sandblasted and covered with cerakote instead of buying new parts, personally (unless the corrosion was really severe).

The significance of the corrosion was beyond help, where the stainless steel screws join the body with the clutch yolk and in a few other areas, just wasn't rebuilt with any care and when saltwater ingres into the gearbox and sat, the rest is history including the $580+ repair bill.

Ive tried engaging some certified Cerakote applicators here in Australia, but honestly I'd have greater luck harvesting gold from seawater and becoming rich from that.

You guys don't know how good you've got it over there with industry that's willing to diversify and help on small projects like old mate from this forum that does the coated reels and guns on IG.
