BFS going mainstream? Curado BFS

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

This is going to be super popular, at least here in EU. People are using plenty of chinese BFS reels because they do not wanna pay for a high-end reel. Those reels while work, nowhere near as good as a Curado. I see plenty of people to step-up, as it is still significantly cheaper than an Aldebaran or something similar.

I got one on the way. Can't wait to see how it stacks up to other BFS reels. I will post my initial impressions, uses, test casting and fishing on here and elsewhere.

TackleTour started my BFS addiction and deserves credit for playing a major role in making BFS where it is today and also where it is going.

I can see it becoming very popular for crappies, trout and river smallies. I use mine for walleye a bunch and its so much more fun than your standard spinning gear.

I'd be surprised if it was anything different from the Scorpion BFS.

That's what I am thinking. For 189 MSRP in the USA, pretty decent offering. With it being marketed in the USA, should spread pretty quick. I will see how similar it is to my Scorpion BFS.

Granted... Daiwa tried with the PX68 several years ago and it quickly went no where.

Are you using it for lead heads for walleye?

Anybody else a bit perplexed by the 3.5kg (~7lbs) max drag? Is the assumption that because it's BFS, nobody will ever want to run line that's more than 8lbs or so, anyway?

This is supposed to have a bait/drag clicker, btw. Which I like - does the Scorpion BFS have the same feature?

The Shimano clicker design takes away the area just on the inside of the outer rim of the gear, so the drag washer on this side can only be close around the axle with a small diameter. This leads to a reduced max drag compared to a reel with the same size gear, for example the Curado 70 where the drag washer is placed on the rim. It’s a difference in surface area and I believe also torque.

Yes the scorpion has a clicker as well. Also, both are lighter than a regular Curado 70 which points to the Curado bfs featuring the same aluminum main gear as the scorpion. The scorpion is still 10 grams lighter which is probably the result of a less bulky handle and knobs.

Edit: wait. Was the gear actually aluminum? I remember it’s black and quite unique

I plan on pairing mine with that new Dobyns Sierra Ultra Finesse Casting rod for walleye and finesse bass fishing. I just picked up the 700c. It is a pretty nice rod. Solid tip but, not like those Tatula or Steez tips. The tip pairs very well and naturally with the tubular blank. A versatile bass taper but, just lighter in power than your traditional M powered rod. Great for finesse plastics, cranks and topwaters from what I have tested so far.
