Comparing 36mm 1520 spools cast characteristics
Comparing 36mm 1520 spools cast characteristics
Picking up a couple extra spools for Zillion TWHD. The stock, fixed inductor with standard magforce brake, spool may not have max cast distance with lighter or aerodynamic lures but it sure is stable controlled in braking profile. Windy days it seems to work quite well.
Was considering picking up a Catalina spool for max casting performance with its magforce Z and long cast profile.
The other was the Ryoga spool. But I have never casted one. How does its spool cast compared to the Zillion and Cataliha? I assume sort of in-between with better over all brake performance to the Zillion and its standard magforce and fixed inductor. But having never had one in hand just guessing?
How do the aftermarket DIY 36mm 1520 spools perform?
Is there vendors that are goto for spools at better price points or just the standard jdm sites i.e hedgehog ....?

Re: Comparing 36mm 1520 spools cast characteristics
I've only used the Catalina TW spool and stock spool in my HD. The Catalina has Tatula 150 like line capacity and has pretty good braking profile. Its sorta fast while still controlled. Its a good spool to pair with braid and compact baits that cast well. I use my HD on a Hyuga 72H and the Catalina TW spool gets the nod for frog use. The stock spool is great at taming heavy non braid and use mine with 20# big game. That 20# BG flows off that spool and through the TWS beautifully with big baits up to 3 oz. Beyond that I'm bumping up to a big boy reel and rod. Ideally I wish the Catalina TW spool had an HLC spring and was deeper. It dosent hold much more line than a TD Zillion or Curado K and the reel is huge by comparison.
There are 3 Aliexpress spools for the reels. A fixed inductor shallow ZPI like one. A shallow air brake Ray's one and some weird brand deeper but still shallow air brake one. There are also two HLC spools from the Zillion TWS HLC reels.

Rays HLC will bomb anything above 1/4 with a wrist flick, don't lob it or you will blow the spool up.

The Ray's one is the really shallow one correct?filthyPhil wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 8:02 amRays HLC will bomb anything above 1/4 with a wrist flick, don't lob it or you will blow the spool up.

looks like the red and black ones in the bottom pic but no bearing cover. Not sure on line cap but it holds plenty of 10 and 12# mono. Has the adjustable rotor.

36mm spools or 34mm spools?filthyPhil wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 10:37 amlooks like the red and black ones in the bottom pic but no bearing cover. Not sure on line cap but it holds plenty of 10 and 12# mono. Has the adjustable rotor.

Fits Steez A SV and zillion 100HA. How do I measure?

Spool shaft is 36mm.
Re: Comparing 36mm 1520 spools cast characteristics
Spool diameter. The spool you have is a 34mm spool long cast spool which I'm not convinced is all that long casting. Efortless pretty good distance casting spool yes. Its got nothing on my TD Zillion HLC distance wise with 1/2 oz and up.

Re: Comparing 36mm 1520 spools cast characteristics
It does fine for 50 bucks. I fish out of a boat and kayak so I have no need to spool any reel. Honestly I have other reels stock out of the box that cast better and my old zillion 100ha casts better with the original spool. This was my first and last venture into the spool swapping thing.
Re: Comparing 36mm 1520 spools cast characteristics
Thanks
Speaking of high capacity, wish they would make a 1520 36mm spool with the deep spool specs of that discontinued TD Zilliin 100 hyper long cast spool. Too bad we can't have spools as deep as the centrifugal s like the Shrapnels but trade offs for the magforce.
What about the diy 1520 sv spools for lightweight finesse lures? Anygood?
I took a look at the ZPI PG spool s but ouch they are mighty proud of those spools for a fixed inductor.
All in all I think the 1520s in the ryoga and Zillion hd are a good compromise in terms of size strength and spool capacity.

Re: Comparing 36mm 1520 spools cast characteristics
Lowrange,
Between the Zillion hlc and catalina which is the better caster with say 1/4 -1/2 ounce?
Which of the two has the better line capacity? I thought it 2as the Catalina.
Thanks

Lowrance,
Never mind just saw your last post innthe 18 Zillion TWHD thread
So the hlc would be best for say long casting frogs 55/65 braid?
For max line capacity overall on 36mm 1520 spools would that be the tatula hd oem spool?
Specs on hedgehog show 20lb - 135m, 25lb - 100m nylon. 25lb nylon is about 0.50mm that's about equal to 120lb braid. Crazy to think that spool could hold 100yds of 120lb premium braid. If close that would be like 40lb-200yd 20lb-300yd braid. The spool certainly has a very narrow diameter barrel. This is most evident in pictures looking at the comparison of the barrel to the flange and inductor.

Re: Comparing 36mm 1520 spools cast characteristics
The Tatula spools won't fit the Zillion HD reels. The Tatula reel use a long spool shaft and the Zillion reels use a free floating spool. The Catalina spool is a good distance caster but it does not match my TD Zillion HLC spool. I have no experience with the Zillion TWS HLC spools. I already have a TD Zillion HLC spool for my Megabass IP reels with similar lime cap so I have no interest in the Zillion TWS HLC spools.
Re: Comparing 36mm 1520 spools cast characteristics
I really like the Ray's in my Zillion TWS. Got the purple one with holes and it casts great. Just has a raspy sound during cast and retrieve at times. Like a semi-BFS spool...
