Budget Freshwater setup

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Budget Freshwater setup

Post by mickeyfin » Fri May 21, 2021 9:04 am

Hi All,

my 6 year old grandson is ready to go fishing. Gave him a bunch of plastics so according to him he has enough bait. Next step is to find a suitable spinning set-up. You know, the type that if it falls in the drink I won't get upset :)
Thanks, Mick

What's the price range? Huge differences even between a $50 and $100 budget. If you're okay with >$100 I'd go with a Powell Diesel or Dobyns Colt rod, and add a cheap Okuma spinning reel to it.

I have a collection of Powell Inferno rods (predecessor to the resurrected Diesel line) with cheapish reels for my wife and son and they perform great. 711, 702, 704 - covers all the finesse and senko bases.

Daiwa Exist 2000 on a Steez AGS 7’6” MML (lol).

I got my grandsons an inexpensive combo for Bass Pro total cost $30 each. The main concern is they had a difficult time to know when to stop winding... I’ve replaced two tips so far... :D

Fir a combo that is tough enough for a grandkid yet, enjoyable to use by you, I would get a Pflueger President. Nice tough spinning reels that perform above their price point.

For the rod, really depends on how big of fish and the cover. Rods are labeled all over the place in regard to power and taper, especially the lower in price you go. Kinda need to feel it or, just accept the rods rating may not be what you think

5'6" MF Ugly Stik with a President 30. Nice enough but not too nice.
