JDM Zillion 1000 feelings

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

JDM Zillion 1000 feelings

Post by montey » Thu Jul 15, 2021 9:36 am

Hello

Anyone out there been using a JDM Zillion 1000? I've never used an aluminum geared reel, but was interested in this reel.
I'd be using it for jig and t rig fishing primarily. Thanks.

My 8.5 has bottom contact duty and had pulled quite a few fish now. Still as smooth as new.

That's what I was looking at. The 8.5.

I’m using that for deep cranks. Bass up to 8 lbs. Still smooth.

I’m fishing a Japan made 8.5 regularly and often. Lots of FL sized fish on it. Still smooth.

I've got all the gear ratios in the JDM Zillion.

So far, so good.

Its Shimano that has issues with the aluminum gears.

If you're using baits 3/8 oz and up, it's definitely a great casting machine, very good. Not so good at a quarter ounce and below. The form factor is excellent.

To say I'm not a fan of micro module gears is an understatement. I've had 3 separate Met B XGs all go buzzy with the brass MM gears within just a couple days use. Actually had to put new gear sets in them before I sold them they were so bad. Now I just don't trust MM gears regardless of material. I've had no issues with the aluminum non MM aldebaran gears in the bfs and MGLs.

I don't use braid, just 10-12lb mono/fluoro so my drag is set comparably light to some folks and they still went buzzy after a few fish. I don't get it because some folks seem to get good life out of them.

I added a few more fish to the zillion's resume yesterday and it just stays butter smooth without a hiccup. Love it.

Glad to see this thread, I am thinking of getting a 7.1 JDM Zillion, the 8.5 is just a bit too fast. If it were a 8.1 I'd get it, but I think having the 7.1 will have better torque and hopefully outlast the larger geared 8.5.

I don't get it either. Especially after a few fish. That's maybe ~100 or so revolutions of the handle. I don't see how the gear profile of a brass gear, MM or not, is going to change substantially after ~100 revolutions. I would almost say that it sounds like your main gear and pinion get off-axis slightly which can make gear noise higher. Not gear wear.

My Mets all still seem fine. Some of which have caught dozens big redfish.

Yeah I was pretty disappointed feeling it change so rapidly. I've had bantam and Chronarch MGLs with 8.1 MMs and they held up fine and aluminum geared Aldebarans run strong but Met Bs and me have not had a healthy relationship. Sad too because I like everything about the Mets other than the buzz. Maybe your right and something was off axis with them causing a premature failure but for all 3 bought at different times from different places to do the same thing? Who knows...
