Daiwa Certate not casting far
Hey guys,
So I purchased a “brand new” Daiwa Certate LT 3000CXH off eBay for a decent price but after adding 20lb j braid and 8lb fluoro leader, for some reason the casting is stopping a lot shorter than I expected.
The reel was open box but brand new so I don’t know if there’s any issues.
I’m comparing it to my other spinning reel which is the tatula LT which is a 2500 but casts much further on the same 7’2 rod I used it on.
Could I have possibly caused something to slow down the reel when I added line?
Can there be something wrong with the reel?
I don’t think there’s a brake system I can adjust unless I’m wrong.
What could be causing the lack of distance?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Daiwa Certate not casting far
Is the reel spooled all the way?
If it is underspooled the lip will slow down the line coming off the spool more significantly.
Otherwise, if you use exact same rod, line, leader length, lure weight then the only other reason would be your casting stroke since the spool is fixed.

And the angle from to spool to the first guide.

It’s probably the braid is catching on itself and cutting distance. You might try to re-spool it with more tension on the line and see if that corrects it. I’ve had had this happen fresh after filling it on the first cast, even when I thought I had it good. Check and see if after the cast the line looks like it’s going under the next wrap instead of laying on top.

It was definitely spooled more than under spooled to the point where I removed some off thinking that would cause the problem but didn’t help.rando wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 6:29 pmIs the reel spooled all the way?

As for casting stroke, I’ve casted the same lure over and over and still get shorts casts unlike the Tatula LT.

Ya I was thinking of re spooling with more tension.Finesse Angler wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 7:57 pmIt’s probably the braid is catching on itself and cutting distance. And I’ll definitely keep an eye on the line when I cast to see if it’s going under.
I added a quarter ounce weight and casted in the backyard and it still didn’t bomb. I thought maybe the line would correct itself if it was causing the problem but didn’t work.
Thanks for the advice

Re: Daiwa Certate not casting far
I'm going out on a limb because realistically your options as to 'why' in this case are limited. I come back to the same thought, because years back it happened to me, in that 2500 vs 3000 series have a different size spool. This is obvious, and while generally insignificant given size proximity, it's possible the larger diameter loop you're now casting simply does not flow through the same guide train as freely. If you had your prior assembly maxed out performance wise (2500) and are attempting to pull larger loops through the same guide train it's possible your cast is being choked off. A rod/reel assembly has to mesh. If you spool both reels with whatever line you have on the 3000 currently and cast both side by side you should be able to hear a difference. But if you can see a difference, or if you can feel a difference, then you've identified your problem. If this is the case you might maybe be able to downsize line a touch to compensate, otherwise you'll need to add a slightly larger stripper guide or simply get a larger stick. Apology on long wind response,
PEACE

As Good Year mentions... "choke"...
Set-up a Gopro on burst and cast the rod in front of it and review the images and you'll see the line go through the train and see any evidence of line slap and so forth.
Few screen grabs of my build and "choke tests"

Measure the diameter of the spools (Tatula and Certate). If my memory is correct the new generation LT reels have smaller diameter spools so one needs to upsize. I was watching Seth Feider the other he is going for 4000 size reels since the new LT reels are much lighter and he is going for the biggest spool diameter.

I’m going to re spool and see what happens and then downsize the line.
Everything you said makes sense, I just never thought of it because I never had issues I guess.

I don’t have a go pro though.
I’ll cast a bunch of times and try to see if my eye can notice a difference.
Thanks!

And you are right, the newer reels are much lighter than the past and that’s why I opted for a 3000 this time than my normal 2500.
Thanks
Re: Daiwa Certate not casting far
I didn't think the spools were that diff in diameter, maybe 2 mm or something?
Is the braid on both spools worn in the same?

Re: Daiwa Certate not casting far
The tatula has always casted good.
Braid on it is one season old.
I just got the Certate and put brand new 20lb j braid.
I never used j braid, just power pro super slick v2 but I heard I braid was better.
Re: Daiwa Certate not casting far
I would suspect the line is the issue. New braid often has a coating which is slightly sticky, and can hamper casts until it's worn off a bit. Personally I hate J braid, but others love it. If the J braid isn't significantly thicker than the PPV2 on the other reel then I expect it will start to cast better once you've got some time on the reel and the line's worn in. No reason a certate and Tatula should cast any different otherwise.
