Set it and forget it reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Set it and forget it reel

Post by Sh402 » Sun Sep 12, 2021 1:56 pm

Hey guys have a question for anyone with experience with lews and Shimano. I had 2 lews hypermags and they were pretty much set it and forget it reels unless heavy winds. I just didn’t like the hollow feeling when reeling. My question is how are Shimanos in the 250 to 400 range. Do you need to adjust the brake settings a lot for lure changes. I fish primarily baits from 1/4 to 3/4. I was looking at bantams, chronach, metanium. Thanks guys In advance!

Have the Bantam and the Met20. The bantam is the better for over 1/4, the met does light stuff way better. Both take some internal and external adjustment to dial in.Lews tournament pro is little heavier less flashy than the hypermag but is the better reel in my opinion.

Any Daiwa for me. Set the spool tension for a tiny amount of play, put the mag dial on the middle and you can never touch it again unless you are trying to skip something.

Imo the newer shimanos are more finicky than the old vbs style breaking reels like e series etc. But once you get them dialled in they are solid. The newer reels have breaking adjustment on the palm side plate and if you go from 3/4 oz to 1/4 oz your gonna need to adjust a little but not remove the side plate and mess with breaks

The Daiwa TW SV reels are set and forget. You don't even need to thumb these things--it makes switching back to something else more difficult hahaha

Basically any SV reel. The new Zillion is a little wilder to me, the brake system is attempting to gain more distance and it shows, however it is still way easier to use than an MGL reel. My wife can confidently fish any Daiwa reel I own and get fair distance, the MGL reels require a good bit of thumb though and she has trouble with them. If you set an MGL reel for thumb free ease, you seem to lose the distance advantage they have over say an SV style reel.

Would love to see the VBS come back. That was truly a set and forget braking system.

No doubt!
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

VBS was awesome. My advice would be a Daiwa SV reel of your choosing.

I mean, just set the DC brakes to Automatic and you will never need to touch the adjusting dial, but at the same time, the set and forget will never give you the maximum distance the reel is able to achieve. Personally, i can never use the set and forget settings when knowing i can still gain meters of distance.

I always set a forget it.

Until I really change a lure type by weight for sure or I'm fishing full front winds.
slip bobbing is the laziest way to fish

I find myself fiddling with the spool tension a lot on the only VBS reel I have.

Well guys I got a chronarch 8 gears coming in the mail had a bunch of bass pro gift cards. Do you guys usually just run stock bearings? I think I read somewhere Shimano uses high quality ones.
