Anymore 50 sized reels?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Anymore 50 sized reels?

Post by ShimanoYaker » Sun Sep 26, 2021 7:23 pm

Just recently bought the Aldebaran 51mg and Scorpion XT1001 on ebay for a good price, I was wondering if there were any more 50 sized reels? I know the Aldebaran has the BFS variants which I may probably get in the near future. Ever since I got my hand on a Core 51 I fell in love with the size. Thanks!

The Stile SS is based on the Curado 70 frame, which is also compact like the 50....but the 70 size reels are another rabbit hole entirely!
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

The 50 series is a great platform.
They are durable and will last for a long time. Most of the parts are interchangeable also and can be mix matched with each other.
Still one of my favorites.

Shimano 70 sized reels are equally small. There are USDM and JDM versions of them. I like the Engetsu myself. It's a red and black Scorpion 70 with bass MM gears, shallow spool and am aluminum handle side plate with clicking drag. Mine is on a ML Zodias and it bombs weightless 4 inch senkos.

Not sure why we get hung up on the numbers, as they don’t tell the whole story. These numbers usually relate to spool size, although there are some weird ones out there. The 70 is now the new 50 size. As Tim said, the Stile SS is a 70 sized reel, but listed as a 150. The reel is more compact than the Curado/Core 50, and the spool is even shallower, so it doesn’t always make sense. Love the 50/70 size reels, and the newer versions just keep getting better.

Nice collection only BFS XG and Brenious that are missing. Too bad I’m selling the almost new Brenious but in right hand.

Don’t forget the Shimano Stephano 200!
Although it is a vertical jigging reel, and has no brake system, it is a very shallow spool and with good thumbs you might be able to get a decent bfs reel out of it… that being said it is probably the rarest of the Shimano 50 frame reels here in NA.

I nearly brought the Brenious
Learned that the reel wouldn’t accept any other 50 spool and that sucks.
I’m looking but not looking for a core 50.
It’s one that’s hard to find in good great shape

Still my favorite reels of all time. Damn near got rid of my collection, but my CU50E, that one stays as I could rebuild it 2x, plus build a whole new one with the parts I have.

I definitely did that phase for sure it was super fun I loved building them up because parts were plentiful and looked neato(subjective of perspective) plus they just flat-out perform relative to the technology for the time 8-) always felt like they were AK-47s maybe not the most precise but gets the job done can get dirty and still keep on putting it down range :big grin:

Just be careful, the Brenious might hold less line than some other BFS reels due to narrower spool. It is for sure hold less line than Yumeya spool. It cast very good though, can cast light weight lure very good and bomb cast heavier stuffs better than BFS.
