8+:1 Gear Ratio Reels

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Don't have anything faster than a 7.2 and don't feel like i need anything.
Have you tried the faster stuff? I thought that I would never need anything faster than 7.3, but it's hard to go back.
Tried 8.1 for a short duration. Meh. For frogging and flipping, i can see it being great, but i don't want my gears to go buzzy buzzy mode in half a season.
My SV103XS reels haven’t been a problem. It is important to go with a proven durable reel for these techniques. All gears are not created equal. I use my 7.3 OG Zillions a lot. They are hard to hurt and fast enough because of the 36 mm spool. We need to have a thread for proven durable extra high speed gears
TD Zillions have great gearing but even my IP68 with the stock gears and heavy use frogging was way smoother than my IP79 with similar use. 7.3 gears seem to be a nice compromise.
Yes. My 7.3 Zillion gears are very smooth and durable. I go all the way down to 7.1 when I am walking the frog with a slower cadence.

I really like my 8.0:1 and 8.6:1 gears for Steelhead and Salmon. I can actually keep up with them when the water temp is above 40F. After using a Tatula 300 8.0:1 this season bobber fishing kings, 43” of line per crank, I was amazed. Looking like some Zillion 10.0’s in my future for steelhead bobber work.

I have been slowly buying up Tatula 150’s swapped to 8.0:1 from TTT for mono main winter steelhead fishing. I suspect that’s in the 35”-36” per crank speed and I find I keep up with hot winter steelhead fine enough. Like that bigger, wider spool for 12-14lb mono main.

The hardest pulling hardware I throw are mild crankbaits and single Indiana blade spinners, so those aren’t much trouble working the high gears over. I’m running XH TW HD’s and a ‘19 Morethan 1000XH. I do specifically run a 7.3:1 TW HD straight mono for hardware fishing below freezing.

Instead of converting Tatula 150s to 8:1 you can find new old stock old Tatula Type Rs. They are the same big box shaped Tatula but come in an 8:1 most commonly. The 8:1ratio of the old Tatulas was exclusive to the Type R.

These old ones also supposedly have grooving issues with the back part of the tws. It's an easy fix to change out the twing but I have never experienced it on my 2016.

Also this spool is worth a look for anyone with these old Tatulas. US $34.25 51%OFF | DIY DAIWA 2014 2015 TATULA TYPE R /TATULA103SH /TATULA HLC /FUEGO /2019 TATULA 150 FISHING REEL SPOOL Custom Long Cast

There are some lures, like a buzzbait, that are a little easier to move fast with a higher gear ratio but beyond that I think that it doesn’t matter much. Using the Steez CT as an example, the difference to retrieve a bait 40 feet is four handle turns comparing the 6.3:1 gears to the 8.1:1 gears. The difference is only two turns with the 7.1:1. How much time does it take to turn the handle twice?

I have many different gear ratios and really don’t notice the difference much, except for the crazy cranker Zillion that is on the deep cranking rod.

I love them for frogs and pitching jigs/t-rigs. Everything else of mine is a 7:1 gear ratio. The 8:1 helps you bring the line in faster for the next pitch.
