Zillion TW HD ‘22
Re: Zillion TW HD ‘22
I'm considering getting one of these for frogging. Any feedback/experiences? I understand the line capacity might be a bit low, but I usually don't throw giants frogs and I think I'll be fine (setting the hook on a frog fish 100+ feet far out is an adventure, anyway). Handle seems good if it's the same as on the 18 HD. Black will look good on an Expride (I've made it a habit to mix Shimano and Daiwa rods/reels )
Two questions:
Did anybody ever verify that it has a brass gear? ("High-tensile brass main gear and copper alloy pinion gear")
(Edit: Never mind, I found the info: 6kg/13lbs. Not world class, but should be plenty). Does anybody know how much drag it has (at least per Dawia spec)? Can't find that information anywhere.

It does indeed have brass gears in both ratios. I have the 7.1 and 8.1 hd gear sets and clicking drag setups in my alphas sv tw reels.Drakestar wrote: ↑Sat May 14, 2022 3:57 pmI'm considering getting one of these for frogging. Where did you find the gear sets, Plat?

Correct, he ordered from Plat.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Re: Zillion TW HD ‘22
I got my reel today from JapanTackle. Dry-reeling it, it feels kinda cluttery and scrapy. Part of that might go away after I grease the reel, but I notice that the spool bearing has significant play on this reel - when shaking the spool, it goes up and down by a millimeter or so. Can anybody confirm whether this is normal?
Re: Zillion TW HD ‘22
Are you saying the bearing moves up and down on the spool shaft about a mm?Drakestar wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 1:25 pmI got my reel today from JapanTackle. Yeah, on the spool shaft. Once I'd dialed in the reel (spool tension via the "Zero" Adjuster in particular) it stopped being an issue when the spool is loaded into the reel, but I earmarked checking some other SV spools to see if I've just never noticed it.ss30378 wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 8:42 pmAre you saying the bearing moves up and down on the spool shaft about a mm?Drakestar wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 1:25 pmI got my reel today from JapanTackle. I made a few casts with a frog yesterday and I think the reel will do great for what I want it for. It wasn't frog weather at all, but I could verify no issues casting straight into the wind.

Yes, Daiwa spool bearings almost invariably have some play in the bearing that is attached to the spool. Shimano recently introduced "silent tune", which is basically a spring behind the spool bearing that keeps it from moving back and forth like that. Not sure if that helps any, but it's a cool gimmick, if nothing else.Drakestar wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 1:25 pmI got my reel today from JapanTackle. From Shimano's website:
"By applying a slight pressure to the bearing holding the spool, it reduces the vibration of the bearing during high speed rotation. This realizes further quietness improvement during casting."

Re: Zillion TW HD ‘22
Thanks for the extra info!
Couple more thought that I'd forgotten: the reel is tiny for a Zillion. I was expecting a small reel already having read this thread, but even with those expectations set I was still surprised by how small it is. I replaced a customized Pflueger Patriarch (150-sized reel built on the old Revo platform), and that old reel has a bigger footprint than this Zillion. (especially width).
Spool size seems fine to me, I was able to exactly transfer the 65lbs Powerpro Maxcuatro from that old Pflueger 150 spool to the new Zillion spool. I don't know if I would be happy with the amount of line on heavy-duty applications, but for frogging, it seems totally okay.

Re: Zillion TW HD ‘22
Yes; this reel is indeed quite small. Here is an apples to apples comparison against the older body in the SLP 9 version. Makes the older one look like a dog in a sense, but I'm also used to capacity with big line for HD versions. TIme will tell. Also, good one from today.

Re: Zillion TW HD ‘22
Gonna get one of these and a 73MH Posion Adrena as an all-around multi tool. Eventually. To me its just a black Zillion. Doesn't have the capacity to be a bjg bait or HD reel to me and that's just fine.

Re: Zillion TW HD ‘22
That's how I feel about mine, I let my z2020 be the big bait reel and let this just be a smooth black zillion to catch everything you encounter inshore fishing. It definitely was out classed by a tarpon and a king fish last year
Re: Zillion TW HD ‘22
So, for $60 over the standard JDM Zillion you get…1) brass gears 2) black paint 3) 100mm handle w/ EVA knobs w/ 2 bearings each vs only 1 bearing/knob in the standard Zillion(I’m guessing this is where the extra 2 bearings are? Unless for some reason they put them in the levelwind?)
4) an aluminum drag star, yes? vs. Zaion 5) a standard capacity MagZ Boost 34mm spool
It definitely seems worth the $60 to me. Did I miss anything? Is my information correct? I don’t actually have the reel…I’m really interested in the new MagZ Boost spool. How does it compare with the standard MagZ spool from the Steez A or MagZ PE spool in my’19 Morethan?
On paper, the specs actually look very similar to the ‘19 Morethan which is actually impressive I think. I suppose my Morethan does have the bronze 8.6 gears. Daiwa is definitely raising the bar these days. I’m also curious about the Silver Wolf PE variant of the Zillion.
