Zillion TW HD ‘22

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

I was kinda hoping the HD would come in both a narrow spool and wide spool 36mm. Just to have more of those spools around for selfish reasons owning two IPs and a Zillion HD. Daiwa has really left a void for a higher capacity mid to higher end reels. Even with the Tatula based Zillion HD the platform was huge relative to the spool dimensions. To top that off they put shallow 36mm wide spools in it that only hold as much as a narrow 34mm reels. I would understand the huge reel relative to the spool size if they didn't invent the Twing and wanted the level wind a mile away from the spool but they did.

Clearly with the current Zillion they can shrink a reel down around a spool so just make a small TWS 36mm wide spool Zillion already give it a deep MagZ spool. Zillion Hyper HD.

I wish Daiwa would listen to you.

The Steez A HLC meets 2 of 3 criteria.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

I wish they made a new, big Steez with the wide spool and deep capacity like the Zillion TW HD. All the goodies in a slightly bigger reel. 150 size is a reel sweet spot for me. I like compact 200’s, but I know that limits spool tech…

It's a narrow spool 36mm and I'm glad that platform exists so I can buy a spool for my IPs someday. We could use a new platform that uses the wide spool 36mm spools. This new HD Zillion would make sense to have a 36mm spool. HD and higher capacity kind of go together.

I just ordered one. It’s not listed as an ‘22 though.

I was able to get the Zillion HD out for a little bit today between the rain. I have it paired up with a Powell Max3D 714. I really love this reel. I was throwing a 3/8 ounce jig with beaver trailer into the wind (10-25 mph) on brake setting 5 and didn’t have a hint of backlash. I would get some loose coils at the beginning of the cast on setting 4 so I just ran it on 5 the whole time. Casting distance was really good but it’s also my first reel with the Magforce Z Boost spool so I really don’t have a frame of reference. I was able to break her in properly with a small bass. I didn’t think I’d like the eva knobs but they actually grew on me very quickly. The reel also pitches very well, especially since I suck at pitching. I’ll definitely be grabbing another one when the local tackle shop gets more LHs in stock.

Happy Holidays,
Joe

Have people gotten their hands on the new 34mm HD TW from “2022” - or is it the older 36mm version with a silver spool?

I got the 2022 model, but I’m also stationed in Okinawa, Japan though.

I went through all of the pics and it’s supposed to be a 34mm black spool.

Didn't even knew there was a 34mm version. Interesting. But all i want from it is the engine cover and the cast control collar in that sweet looking blue

just got my reel this morning , as you can see in the pics only the top of the reel is a matte black and the sides are a gloss black. Feels the usual Daiwa smooth , i'm sure it will be an exceptional performer , will pair this up with my 7'11 f/p Steez rod. Nothing about this reel is HD when compared to the previous model ,its pretty much a zillion sv tw with a bigger handle & slightly different spool. if you don't have a reel addiction like i do , i'd suggest getting the previous model on closeout sale as it has mag sealed bearings .

Yup, received mine this morning too …

I was a bit concerned about the 100mm handle/knobs until I saw size and remembered I used to use grater grips on my old Abu reels …

Here’s to new tackle!
