Zillion TW HD ‘22

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Na, you are good man, all fair comments and question I would say. I have thought and wondered the same. What is interesting is if the handle were a gear and turned by another mechanism, then IT WOULD affect gear ratio (the ratio would be whatever was turning that). So even though handle length does not directly affect IPT, longer handles take longer to turn.

Just picture a yardstick glued to your reel handle. Whether you turn the yard stick once or the handle once, the spool moves the same. Just get more or less torque from the handle length. Same concept as tightening a bolt, the threads turn the same whether you use a 10" ratchet or a two foot breaker bar.
Great example for me at least.. but Now that handle length has been put to bed in 2022 ( it resurrects once a year )
I thought I wouldn't like the handle but when using the reel i grew to appreciate it.. and the long knobs just dont bother me like I thought they would. Silky smooth powerful reel and just gorgeous to look at.

How is casting performance? I’m a shimano guy but think I’m in for one of these.

Out of the box but I’m flipping pitching punching 3/4 weight and a crawfather from missile baits

Can you see using one for swimbaits from 1-3oz?

Now there is one issue I always remember, short handles on spinning reels will give you a harder start up, making the reel feel less smooth. Now back to the topic at hand, that I why I enjoy my old Zillion TWS w/ a 100mm handle and 7.3 gears, very strong feeling reel. I see that this new 22' HD Zillion has a 100mm handle so that should for sure help with swimbaits and what not. I will say I tried my old Zillion TWS 9.1 (w/ 100mm handle) for heavier lures and I hated it. Maybe it was just a set of gears or in my head, but it was enough for me to order 7.3 gears from Tackle Trap. So if I were suggesting the new Zillion TW HD for heavier lures, I would stay away from the XH gear, even with the 100mm handle. Might not damage the reel or gears, just for me they begin to feel like riding a bike uphill in too high of a gear.

Hi,

Can anyone tell what is the range of lure weight on this reel?

Thanks!

Radu

Sorry been busy with other things

Reel has a fairly deep spool so I don’t see why you couldn’t use braid but I have 20# floro for now and it holds plenty

3oz swimbait shouldn’t be any issues with this reel

I agree. You'll be fine with 20 lb. I have 20 lb on a couple of the non HD versions and it holds enough line.

I got my Zillion HD delivered today. A couple of thoughts:

1. The handle knobs are comfortable and the EVA is hard/dense. I wasn't sure how I would like them.
2. The silver side plate screws are cheap looking when the rest of the reel is black.

Digitaka told me it can handle 10-80gr lure range.

Hope that helps!

This thing has standard 34 mm spool capacity. For 3 oz and 20# line I want something deeper and/or wider. 65# braid will spool with a 1 oz bait like a plopper 110. I can get some frogs to do it on 50# even. Might not be an issue on the more clumsy casting baits like glide baits. Tail weighted baits, big frogs and weight transfer baits in the just the 1 oz range will destroy the line cap in this reel.

I ended up buying one but will probably use it for cranking or paddle tails because of the line cap issue. I wish there were more options similar to the 1520 HD.

Want a low profile around 9-10oz with a IPT around 30. Only thing I can find is the Lews super duty 300.

Track down a like new Z2020 or Z200. They are 38mm wide spool reels with Magforce Z 3D and a conical line guide. These reels were way ahead of their time and still more advanced than anything Daiwa has out today IMO. The inductor spring is pretty stiff so they are already a long casting reel but thanks to the 3D braking they can be set to cast even more free at the end of the cast on long cast mode or to put the hammer down on the braking on max brake. Size wise they are slightly bigger than the old Ziliion HD/old Tatula to palm. They have paint peeling issues though. The USDM Z200 might have better paint. It does have a heavier spool than the Z2020 but gets a thinner inductor. I have a Z200 and it'll throw 1oz on braid on long cast as far or further than my TD Zillion HLC. The HLC will spool itself and the Z200 lets the bait keep flying. Amazing casting reel. Why Daiwa abandoned Magforce 3D I'll never know.

I tried to post a picture but getting the file size too big error.
