Smoothest gear grease.

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

After some research, I now use Dupont Krytox GPL 225 for gears rather than ZPI Medium, which is a significant upgrade over an excellent grease
What do you like about the Kyrtox grease? Is it smoother, does it stay on the gear longer?

Both reasons. The reels are so smooth, that if your eyes were closed and turned the handle, you would think the spool was not in the reel. Several friends have begun using that grease after handling my reels.

Attached is the maintenance/tuning "process" I use on all reels (new and previously owned) either before first use or soon after.

One thing I don't understand about many of the boutique lubricants out there, why no MSDS or specification sheets? Very, very few of the reel specific lubricant manufacturers actually provide the data about their product. What are they hiding? I want to know exactly what I'm using as I'm not one for outlandish claims or "our recipe is so super secret we can't tell you what it is". I get the impression it's just repackaged from something else with a cute label and a much higher price attached. For what it's worth, I have tried some of the JDM lubricants many of us reel nerds like to use. I felt no discernible differences between those lubricants and the stuff that I picked based on the data provided by the manufacturer, which ended up being substantially cheaper.

As for smoothest gear grease, I'll reflect on why I use Yamalube cut with Corrosion X. Yamalube is very tacky stuff, it sticks really, really good. Yamalube is a NLGI 2 grease, which on the NLGI scale means it has the consistency of peanut butter. Corrosion X mixes very well with it, and it's pretty easy to thin it out to something like a NLGI 1 or even NLGI 0 consistency. Most of your regular greases out there are NLGI 2, this is what's considered "normal" grease. Thinner grease will mean smoother operation, and Yamalube has a stellar reputation in reel maintenance circles due to its ability to stay put. It's made for harsh conditions and does really well in reels.

All of the specification information you could ask for about Dupont Krytox GPL 225 on the webpage and the SDS download.

That stuff does look amazing. I did look at the MSDS when you first posted it. Know of anyplace that sells it cheaper?

No, but I bought my initial 2 oz. tube last November and now a year later there is more than half remaining after using it on numerous reels. So, the cost is mitigated by the number of reels that can be lubricated with a 2 oz. tube.

You guys are in the another level in a grease talk :D Please proceed.

But yes, suitable grease, cut by Outboard TCW-3 oil, sounds actually good, because TCW-3 greases are sticky ones. I thinks it doesn't matter much is it Yamaha or Quicksilver oil...

Krytox is too damn expensive. I don't want to spend a fortune on grease lol.

How about the Daiwa 104 grease? Is this good? Wanted to try one of these for a while, but never did.

I really like this stuff. It's very soft (NLGI 0) and sticks really good. https://www.super-lube.com/engine-assembly-grease-19003

I think that I have a couple of tubes of Super Lube and a few ounces of TS 321 that you can have

TSI is awesome. Try this out; 8 parts 99% alcohol, 1 part TSI. Dip your spool bearings, dry with compressed air. Thank me later :D

What don't you like about the TSI 321...? I've been really happy with it.

TS 321 is a good spool bearing oil and I have a couple of reels that it is still used in. But I have found ZPI F-0 Extra Long Cast Oil to provide better performance, in most cases, based on testing.

Actually sounds excellent advise!

I have bought some precision oilers that have been disappointment.

Thinned oil might be good solution to apply a drop of oil to bearings! But why alcohol, why not for example acetone?
