Project T 22: 2 new Tatulas

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Inductor and spring swaps:

- Ray's inductor is more finesse tuned than standard inductor in sv spools. But in case of heavier lures, it feels more sporty. It's lighter than standard sv inductor and therefore it needs a little more acceleration to launch. It's broader than standard sv inductor, and therefore there's less difference in case of inductor In/Out.

- Stronger spring makes sv spool inductor just more sporty. It needs faster spool acceleration in a launch. For example Z spring is something 4x times stronger than standard sv style spring. So, in case of light lures, inductor can be hard to launch as it should. sv style spool inductor should move back before cast ends, it is supposed to reduce braking power in the end of cast and make casts longer. And it's the braking momentum which keeps sv style inductor extended. So changing Z spring to sv style spool is much effect to inductor movement. Because brake moment is proportional to spool revolutions, inductor movement back happens in much faster spool speed.

But ray's inductor + Z spring seems nice 'long cast' combo in case ct size (30 mm) spool. It's not really long casting, it's just longer casting than original.

Must have a strong braking profile. I can't go much below half on the majority of my daiwas.

I think it's more the way the spool carries it's weight. I have a variety of Daiwas, most of which have accessory spools, and I'm thinking that this spool behaves much more like a spool that weighs 9 or 10 grams than a spool that weighs 15. I change spools in almost every reel I own with the exception of just a few. Lately I have been using the 80, a Steez SVTW with a megabass IS spool and Hedgehog bearings, a Tatula SV 2020 with a SDS Custom spool and hedgehog bearings and a Tatula SV limited with just bearings. This little 80 holds it own in casting and pitching the baits I use in the river with these reels. I actually prefer the way it casts to the limited with the stock spool. The Steez and Tatula 2020 with the accessory spool cast and pitch a bit further but not as much as the spool weight would indicate it should.

I think there is ideal spool inertia of momentum for every situation.

But in case of light casting it's hard to find too light spool / too little inertia of momentum.

In my opinion best spool inertia of momentum is if spool starts effortlessly and in power cast spool start time is same as rod tip straightens.

Yes, spool can be too light - but in practical fishing it's very un-common and also it's much less harmful than too heavy spool.

Hello! Thanx for information, i found it on aliexpress. But, if i right, difference between 70 SV and 80 model is only spool and 52$. For thie money, i think, Rays or NiceFish produce additional spool for new Tatula soon. And 80 model + spool is better that 70 SV only, isn't it?

Does the 70 have brass gears like the alphas?

They both have brass gears and are long shaft spools. The 70 SV, in my opinion, has a nice glossy finish and a lighter weight spool which makes it much more attractive. Plus, the 80 spool weighs 15 grams. In the US the 80 is $199 so there is only a $30 price difference between the two. The JDM 80 is $160ish tyd with a $40 savings over a USDM 80. Some of that will be offset by changing out the JDM ahort handle to a USDM 90mm or longer though. If the USDM 70 SV on Aliexpress gets similarly discounted then they could be had for under $200 soon. Look at the Aliexpress Tatula Elites. They go for $170ish where in the US they are near MSRP of $250 from most retailers.

I would look at the Tatula Elite Long Cast on Aliexpress if you want to add a cheaper reel. It should perform like cheap version of your Steez SV with Ray's Long Cast spool. Something you could put on a cheaper rod to have something you don't mind getting bear up bank fishing but still offers more than adequate performance.

Hello!
I already has "cheap version of your Steez SV with Ray's Long Cast spool", its call Tatula SV TW 2020 :D .

I look at Tatula 70/80 as "cheap version of Alphas", i'm interesting about narrow spool and how it works with minnows and vibs.

Wow its shallower than the Alphas TW SV too. This 70 SV could be a budget Alphas TW SV shallow.
