Daiwa 22 Silver Wolf SV TW PE Special 1000, 2022

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Daiwa 22 Silver Wolf SV TW PE Special 1000, 2022

Post by Nwlfish » Tue Mar 15, 2022 11:05 am

Anyone heard anything about these reels yet? Interested in getting one of these as a backup reel. Have wanted a Zillion for ages and this looks like the saltwater variant of the Zillion!

I have not heard anything, and I do not believe that reels have started shipping out.
It looks like a very nice reel with most bells and whistles. PE boost spool, fast-moving line guide etc.. My main gripe is the price - nearly 50.000 JPY is getting into to steez territory.

Evidently this is Daiwa's iteration/rebirth of the Zillion PE Special, in the current Zillion platform?

This reel deserves a special color. Enough with these generic black/gray/silver colors.

I’m just curious if anyone has one of these yet? It does appear to be “mag sealed”. It weighs 185 grams which is strange. I’m guessing it still has AL gears but also an AL drag star. The bearings count seems to match the standard Zillion. The extra 10 grams of weight must be in the drag star and “mag seal” I guess.

Mine came in today. Spooled it with with pe 0.8 8 strand and went to a pond to try it out.
Most of the extra weight is definitely in that drag star - it feels like a solid chunk of alum. No complains. The zion drag stars look and feel cheap IMHO, and it's a nice change. The black paint job is kind of matte black. Overall, looks better than the Zillion.

I had it on 168L/bfs expride throwing weightless 5" death adders and 5" senkos (6lb leader) and it surprised how far these plastics were going, quite impressed actually. And it was windy as hell. I had the breaks between 10-12 - way higher than I usually have it set on my other daiwa reels. Overall, well worth the 38,000 yen.

I want to get my hands on the either the new sliver wolf rods, mx or ags. I'm curious how those bream shore rods would work for freshwater fish. Eradicator baitfiness looks like a good match too. Otherwise, I think a light or medium light power bass rod is perfect for this reel.

I got mine last week. and definitely found the spool to be faster and having to run higher brake settings

Would it be impossible to run around 8-10lb fluoro? How much would it hold?

I have not tried it yet with fluoro as I am mostly a braid guy. It's definitely a faster brake profile. It's ideal with the thinner premium braids. Hopefully someone will try it and report back. I would be the wrong person as I use fluoro main so infrequently.

See I am opposite. I use braid only on my BFS setup, 8lb Sufix 832. I also use 50lb for a heavier duty setup, but do not use it much. I have tried 40lb on a MH rod, and tried 30lb on my topwater setup. Both of course offered great sensitivity and casting distance, but occasionally I would get that harsh stop mid cast or after catching a big fish my line would be stuck and dug into itself not even 20 yards down sometimes. I always wound the line on tightly to try and prevent this but it did no good.

Sad thing is I KNOW that I would be better off running a light braid to leader on my ML rod I am currently setting up. I am using an Alphas SVTW w/ 12lb Tatsu right now and it works fine but braid would offer a ton of benefits. The only benefit it doesn't offer for me is line management and chance of disaster so those two keep me on fluorocarbon island.

Anyone who knows about the weight of the Wolf spool? I have a regular Zillion 1000 and I use 10-15 lb braid so I figure a shallow Wolf- or DIY Ray's spool would be better. Anyone compared the latter - Pros, cons?

It's a good looking reel for sure. I love my Zillions, they are very comfortable to me. Still thinking on a Silver Wolf.
Any more opinions out there????
