What handle for this old Daiwa

Post by LowRange » Thu May 05, 2022 6:24 pm

I want a 90mm straight handle with removable knobs for this Daiwa which I think dates to the early 2000s. The drag star is a TD-Z type. Looking for a vintage handle or vintage look modern handle. I'm putting together a period cranking combo. This TD-S, Type R+ spool and gen 1 BPS Crankin Stick. I already have old Zillon knobs for it. The current handle is too short and has riveted knobs.

Will a TD Zillion handle fit with the TD-Z drag star? I think it'll clear if it's a 90mm. I had a BPS recurve handle on it briefly.

I would pickup a ZPI carbon handle for it.

I have a spare 85mm handle from the new Alphas SVTW. Has Zillion SVTW knobs and the stock plastic cover that goes with it.

Thanks but too new and too short. Probably going to go with a straight carbon or TD Zillion handle. The carbon is kind of high end and exotic for a TD-S. Is the TD Fuego handle a 90mm? That looks ideal.

Straight ZPI CF with Zillion Type R knobs and chrome end caps...it'll make it pop a bit.

TD-Z 100M handle would be my vote. Its 90 mm and keeps the vintage look.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

That's what I'll track down. Is the Fuego handle the same thing? The straight carbon fiber handle is a good vintage look but this is a lower end combo. I have a ZPI style Ray's handle on my old flipping stick.

No, the fuego handle is 80mm with riveted knobs. Same basic look as a TDZ 103 handles only it has those ridgy looking knobs like what used to come on the TD Advantage.

Ok thanks. A 90mm TD-Z handle it is. I dug out an old 84m. TD-Z handle and put my new knobs on it. It looks good but is too short. Better than the TD Advantage handle that was on it.

I like the US Trail handle idea, but I personally think the Z2020 knobs are too big and burly for that reel.

It's a big boi. Some sort of procaster that is shaped like a TD-Z.

Yeppers, kinda like the TDX platfrom and other prior LP Daiwas. What I mean is that those fatter Z2020 knobs are power grip and crank knobs IMO, so perhaps they will do fine. I do like the classic black I-knobs on it better.

Just wanted to say that I am super pleased with the casting of that R+ spool in the TD-S. A 3/8 oz Flat A with the new wight transfer system was a rocket making long casts and even did well into the wind. I did run a bit of spool tension and a dial setting of between 9.5 to 7 out of 10. The spool is a bit fast but can be tamed. It's a joy to fish a speedy spool like that these days in a sea of SV spools.

Yeppers, agreed. I was able to acquire a factory gold TDX-HSDF spool bearing earlier this year. I popped it on a TD-ITO Type R spool with 30 lb SS8 II and dropped it back in the same TDX-HSDF, and it is an absolute rocket launcher for distance.

I also enjoy the OG Steez Type R+ spool in my Monoblock Grigio Titanio.
