First world problem

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

First world problem

Post by doomtrprz71 » Tue Aug 09, 2022 3:51 pm

I recently found a brand new deps z2020xh that I subsequently sat an alarm for to win the auction at 4am but now I have a quandary.....what to do with it

I use a regular z2020 to fish Corky's in saltwater so I lean towards building a rod for it for the salt but then again it would look good on my frog rod.....

What to do with a $700 reel AFTER you've bought it is, indeed, a first world, problem.... but a great problem to have! :big grin:

That's part of the beauty, it was cheaper than adding another zillion hd. It's going saltwater fishing Friday so if it brings me luck I guess my jdream will be stuck on frog duty.

My Z200 is my long casting big bait reel. It doesn't offer any more distance with glides but 8" line throughs and weight transfer big cranks watch out. It will send them on long cast mode. Might make for a killer mag deep crank reel too.

This is a frame I wish they would bring back or modify for a newer generation. Getting ready to try a Millionaire myself, a Z2020 or Z200 is even higher on my nostalgia list.

Well, i use mine for musky and 145 & 175 slider swimmers. But in reality i pretty much use it for everything that's large and annoying to cast with standard 100 size reel. When i owed the Conquest D, ryoga, etc, i just stopped wanting to use them when the Z can do the same job, possibly cast further and be much more comfy to palm. Best large reel made.

I finally got the mag dial plastic tooth part #96 replaced on my 2010 Z2020H and also ordered a new set of 6.4:1 gears from Plat.

This reel does everything power fishing for me on just about every rod I have that is 7'6" or longer. I had it out tossing the Jackal Mikey on 40 braid + leader on an OG Phenix Ultra MBX Classic 707MH last week and then also tossed a 3/8 spinnerbait with 3" Kalins grub on the same combo.

Last Christmas I popped a nice 20" largemouth in extremely cold water, low 40s on a 1oz Xcalibur XR100, same Z2020H 50 braid + leader on an old school Megabass Orochi Cyber Shootist 7'11".

The mag dial had been stuck on a higher setting since this past late winter, when the tooth dial part #96 broke after 12 years of hard use, so I had limited use with it due to casting distance suffering...now that the 3D Mag is up and running full speed, I'm looking forward to putting a lot of heavier power tech time on the water with it.

Regardless of what you decide to use it for, just get it on the water, although the XH doesn't have near the same cranking power as the 6.4:1, it should be excellent for glide baits, big jigs, frogs, with that fast line pickup.

After fishing aplachee bay today I've made up my mind, the j dream is stuck on frog duty, the deps will be getting a rod built for it.
