The Most Enthusiast Level Performance CASTING Reel?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

The Most Enthusiast Level Performance CASTING Reel?

Post by Preston » Wed Aug 10, 2022 8:13 am

I was thinking last night as I browsed reels and got bored and frustrated looking at all the gray and silver Daiwa and Shimano reels. I wondered what is the most enthusiast oriented CASTING reel that is still a top notch performer without going way outside of the normal, say 70-200 sized reels.

My reels range from SLX XT at the low end to probably the Conquest BFS at the high end, but the one reel that always, always leaves my satisfied is my Scorpion MGL 150. Something about the feel and color just hits the mark.

So, in your opinion, what's your most enthusiast level reel that performs amazingly well? Pics if you got em!

Megabass TD-Ito, IS, IP, Zonda, Monoblock and LIN reels. Add your choice of spool to your preferred braking profile.

Haha! Dammit! I knew these would come up. I've looked at them so many times and just can't bring myself to pay the price, which is killing my gear soul. I'm a complete sucker for looks and feel.

Some real nice ones get cut lose from members in the classifieds for great prices. A number of IS reels came through and I had to hold myself back. My theory is that a lot of these gems getting cut lose lately are to fund purchases of the new Zillions.

Old school centrifugal brake, 1 block, zero spool tension with a little lateral play, and it'll rip 2g hard baits even in moderate wind. This guy is more controlled than even my SV spools.

I had a thing for the red ones for a while. Down to just the Zonda now.

A fully custom reel with a bunch of aftermarket parts and a custom paint job is the real endgame. Megabass is simply not enough.

Can't give any input on custom jobs, but I would nominate the 2021 Conquest. Offers a 7.4 ratio so you can comfortably cast jigs, one of the smoothest reels of all time, casts lighter range decent, etc. Overall it is the perfect reel to me. You get round reel nostalgia and durability with the casting performance of a new low profile MGL casting reel.
