Dedicated deep cranking reel ideas— Shimano

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Dedicated deep cranking reel ideas— Shimano

Post by green weenie » Sat Sep 03, 2022 12:30 pm

Hi guys. Going with the Met 20s for my conquests and need a dedicated deep cranking reel. Looking at medium to higher end. Considering a bantam 22 at this point, other suggestions.

Thanks. Wes

The new Bantam A would be awesome for deep cranking otherwise a Conquest 100 would be nice as well.

I have a new Bantam A and it's really smooth--I like it better than the Zillion SV TW G, but the price is the reason I have more Zillions hahaha

Daiwa TDZ 100m and increase the handle length
I’m in Florida so I don’t deep crank as much as some do but there’s a particular place where I need a dedicated Deep cranking setup and I went with the st. Croix 7’4 glass. The reel allows me 14/16 floro or 12 but with superb line capacity

If I was to go high end I’d go with a conquest

I really can’t get comfy with the round profiles. I need a low profile. What’s the highest end 200 size shimano? The curado dc? I need to bomb an 8xd or 10xd at times out there.

If you truly need to make extra long-distance casts and are staying within the Shimano ecosystem for your deep cranking requirements, I recommend you take a really close look at the Calcutta Conquest DC reels as suggested by goldrod. All six of my Megabass Valkryie deep cranking casting rods have either Conquest 100 or 200 DC reels mounted on them and have withstood the test of time and abuse fishing for smallmouth bass, pike, and muskie in the NW Wisconsin waters I frequent over the last two fishing seasons.

These are not the round reels of yesteryear such as the ABU Garcia 5500C that my grandfather gave me for my birthday gift over 4 decades ago, Shimano has reduced the size of the Conquest 100 DC to the size of the old 50 DC and the current Conquest 200 DC is the size of the old 100 DC reel, so these new age round reels are nearly as "palm-able" as my standard Shimano Antares DC casting reels.

In addition, here's a timely topic on this specific perspective complete with excellent picture from Cal highlighting the different Conquest reel sizes in question, in case you are interested in pursuing the new Shimano round reels for your deep cranking needs: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=88557

Lastly, with the current weakness of the Japanese Yen, this is an ideal time to purchase JDM reels as these are the lowest prices seen in the last six years!

Good luck with your deep cranking reel search and please have a great day!

I agree with the above sentiment about round reels. The Calcutta line of reels now palm so effortlessly I would argue the 200 size and below are even more comfortable to fish than a low-profile reel. Definitely worth looking into.

To me if using Fluoro or Mono (12-14lbs) I like more line capacity. A Conquest 200 would be my choice. I’m still a lower gear ratio (25” per handle turn) type of guy. I actually use a Revo Winch because I can still cast about 1/2 the spool out with a 6XD, with less spool capacity I’ve actually spooled reels.
If going with Braid you can get away with the Conquest 100 or others Curado, Metainium, etc. Just my personal preference.
Deep cranking I’m talking about 5XDs and bigger, Fat Free Shad, or DD 22s

I assure you that if you get the conquest you will change your opinion on round reels plus the conquest has a flattop which just makes it the most comfortable reel

For a low profile with line capacity, Shimano made the Calais in 200 size with lower 5.1:1 IIRC. Don't know about the current model Calais and Antares but it would be worth checking out.
