Shimano/Daiwa Price Increase

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Looks like 2/1 will be another price increase for Shimano/Daiwa...

Good god, they already jumped not long ago on TackleWarehouse. Zillions are like $369. Are they going to $400 next? I will continue to be a mild enthusiast, but I already gave up on chasing expensive rods. If this keeps up, more people getting into fishing will go the budget route, buying $100 Lew's and Abu's over the Japanese stuff. As wonderful as Daiwa and Shimano are, I turned the handle on a few cheaper $100-50 reels at Wal-Mart and they felt okay. They felt good enough to mislead someone from say a mid priced Shimano or Daiwa. Now I know they might not last as long and might not have the features or name, but for someone just starting out, it is hard to pay $300 for a reel (or rod).

You could always buy it direct from Japan to reduce the cost. I've been doing that and saving over $100 on the Zillions. I have 4 of them now  ](*,)

I agree. I have purchased a number of JDM reels over the last year. Conquest 100HG, Bantam XG, Zillion, Alphas, Zenon, Caldia, etc. Prices are great but a $50 increase here may be a $50 increase there. Glad to have some of the OG reels to fish with too. If they were made today, they would be alot more $$$.

I have bought my Conquest 100HG, Alphas SVTW, Zillion SV1000, and a few others from Japan. I will continue too unless the JPY blows up. I just hate that our prices here are getting so high.

I also agree about the using crap comment, just don't think most people agree. A polished turd will trick some people and as long as that turd catches fish they are happy. Just not as many tackle enthusiasts as some imagine.

I wouldn't own most of the higher end stuff in my possession were it not for the JDM sellers, and getting things lightly used at Yahoo Japan auction.

The only reel I've bought in the US for many years is the 2020 Metanium. The JDM version comes with a shorter handle that I would have had to replace anyways so I figured may as well pay up.

The price increases just make me feel better about all the unnecessary purchases I made some months back when the Yen was over 140. Zillions were under 200 bucks.

Gotta stay in stride with the price of eggs...

Makes me wonder what's going to happen to the used "OG" Daiwa/Shimano rod/reel market.
