Daiwa Deep Crankbait Reel Options
Daiwa Deep Crankbait Reel Options
What are my options in the low profile Daiwa offerings? I have several Tatula 103s already in the boat so prefer that form factor. Typical crank bait lure weight varies from 1/2 to 1 oz. I've seen topics here on the Tatula 150/200 and varying opinions about size and braking types so would appreciate insight on these size options. Preference is casting distance/control over spool capacity.
Current crank bait reel is a Millionaire 203 which works for the application but prefer something with a faster gear ratio (6.3ish) and lighter weight.

I used my JDM Zillion 1000XH and Steez A II XH. I prefer they high speed retrieve because it imitates scuttling craws in the early season and for shad in the summer.
Re: Daiwa Deep Crankbait Reel Options
Haven't thought about going that high of a gear ratio for crank bait, but I do fish where shad are abundant so could be a benefit there.

A Tatula 150 would work but palm like a wide frame version of the Tatula CT. If you don't mind the width then that could be a good cheaper option.

I've spent a good bit of time cranking with the new US Zillion G 6.3:1 and have been very pleased with the distance, rigidity, and smoothness of this platform. If it's within budget, it is defiantly worthy of your consideration.

Re: Daiwa Deep Crankbait Reel Options
I do have a Zillion SV TW 6.3 on a Shimano SLX crank rod and is used for shallow crank work but spool capacity just isn't there for going deep. Dropping down to 12lb FC helped but have broken off a couple times going that light.
Don't really mind a wider form factor so the Tatula 150 may be an option. Sad to think I'm considering sidelining the Millionaire. I love fishing it but need something faster and lighter.

Wasn't the OG Steez A Gen 1 a deeper factory spool?
Also, the OG Zillion 6.3 or US Trail (with 6.3 gears) or OG Fuego would also work.

Re: Daiwa Deep Crankbait Reel Options
Interesting. I use 12# J-Fluoro Samurai when throwing baits like a Megabass Deep Six or a Strike King 6XD on the 6 speed Zillion G without issue. I do go up in line size and reel size for mag deep cranks like the Big M 7.5 or 10XD and enjoy using a Zillion HD 7 speed there when going low profile.PhilHTX wrote: ↑Fri Feb 17, 2023 2:58 pmI do have a Zillion SV TV 6.3 and is used for shallow crank work but spool capacity just isn't there for going deep. The Tatula 150 is a very good cranking reel and certainly has more line capacity. The only meaningful difference between the Tatula 150 and the Tatula 200 is that the 200 has a deeper spool.

Re: Daiwa Deep Crankbait Reel Options
Tatula 150 will probably work. Goal is to work out a crank bait setup for both shallow and deep since rod locker space is at a premium. Only question now is 6.3 or 7.3.

Re: Daiwa Deep Crankbait Reel Options
I now have 4 Tatula 150 5.5 and an OG Tatula 5.4 for crankbaits and a Steez A 5.3
The with doesn't bother me at all. When the Elites come to fish the Sabine River this year our local tackle shop is having Daiwa Day and I will pick me up another one or the new zillion 6.3
Hell it's only money!

Re: Daiwa Deep Crankbait Reel Options
Thanks for the info. Speaking of Zillions, could I install a deeper spool in the SV TW 6.3? If so, what's a good source to get one?
Re: Daiwa Deep Crankbait Reel Options
Tat 150 P is perfect for anything up to 8xd. For 10xd I'd go 200. Do yourself a favor, open it up and grease the main gear and lube the spool bearings, tatulas come dry for the most part. I run a 150 p ,never have gotten into throwing 10xd's.

Hard to beat a Ryoga for smoothness and overall connected feel. My pick is the Steez A II or the USDM Zillion SV G in the 6.3 gear ratio. Those brass gears are as smooth as butter and are great for me.
