High Speed (9-10:1) options

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

High Speed (9-10:1) options

Post by PhilHTX » Sun Apr 16, 2023 8:53 am

What are my options in the $250 range? I had luck bombing jigs into cattails last weekend and managed to yank out a few decent sized bass. A Tatula 8.1 got the job done (on BassX MH/F) but prefer something slightly faster. Reel will likely live on a H/F Ark Lancer and I also plan on using the combo for soft plastics (e.g. worms).

Daiwa Zillion 10 or the Revo Rocket. I don't think the Revo is in that price range anymore. A JDM vendor for the Zillion 10 is about the only way to get that price.

If you can handle a bigger reel, you can find the original Zillion TWS 9.1 pretty cheap new, just have to find them. They have a 36mm spool so recover like 41 inches per turn. Could also find a green trimmed JDM Zillion SVTW. Could always swap gears too. If you want a reel that fast to last, I would get a tough one. The new JDM Zillion is an 8.5 ratio, would be a tad faster, great reel, and fit the price range.

I have a Zillion SVTW and Tatula SVTW in the same 6.3 gear ratio. Could I do a gear swap on either of those to 9:1 or higher?

I have a Revo Black 10. It's a heavier reel, but I loved the look so I bought it.

If the Zillion is an SVTW model (one before most recent), assuming with a gold handle lockplate and gold trimmed tension knob? You can buy the 9.1 gears from Tackletrap and they should work fine. The same gears work on the non SV bigger Zillion TWS, based off the original Tatula frame. The Tatulas do not have anything above an 8 ratio available that I know of, and the Zillion 9.1 gears will not work due to pinion differences.

Revo Rocket LP is around $300(u might find it on sale to fit your budget, I've definitely seen it for like 220 at local sports store), should fit what you're looking for

Thanks for the Revo SX LP link and mentioning Tackletrap. May pick up a Revo and speed up the Zillion anyway since it never saw much shallow crank duty last year.
