Steez 100SH gear swap

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Steez 100SH gear swap

Post by SSS » Mon May 29, 2023 8:44 pm

Looking to change the gears from my Steez100SH since they are not that smooth anymore. I recall reading a while back that the og zillion in the same SH variant is a direct swap (pinion and main gear)? Looking at what's left from plat, and it looks like the only way to get the 7.1 ratio made out of brass is to get zillion SH main gear and steez SH pinion gear since zillion's pinion gears are out of production.

Would also like to know if the 7.3 ratio from Zillion 7.3 Limited 100 and the 7.9 ratio from the Zillion J Dream/Zillion PE Special are also a direct fit into the steez SH.

Following this one. I used to own a Steez EX a couple of years back, that was internally modified by Spankey, to include Zillion 7.1:1. Hopefully he or others that have done the mod will chime in.

Asked PLAT if the 7,3 ratio from the og zillion is available, and it still is. Would like to confirm that its possible to use it inside a steez SH, tho.

See if you can contact Bryan/Spankey, with The Tackle Trap reel service department.

Not necessarily the OG Zillion into OG Steez SH, but rather RH Steez EX gears into the RH Steez SH. 7.3 OG Zillion gears, if they are the same ones as the Zillion Type R, would make for a very robust Steez 100SH.

Yea, i kinda tought of just grabbing them, and try the compatibility if nobody runs the 7.3 ratio in their Steez SH. I don't really need anything over 7.1, but never tried a 7.3 so why not.

The zillion main gear will work, but you have to use the original Steez pinion of the same ratio. Its shorter than the zillion pinion, iirc. 7.1 and 6.3 are the only options there. However, the steez ex 7.9 gears work just fine, if you want a faster ratio.

Interesting, i always thought that the pinion from the OG zillions wasn't compatible with the newer steez a, but was a direct fit on the steez SH. Good thing i didn't order the 7.3 set from the older zillions since there's no 7.3 ratios for a steez pinion gear.

And it is kinda confusing cuz here i am reading that he used these 7.3 gears from the zillion limited in his SS SV, and as far as i am aware, the SS SV has the same gear dimentions as the Steez SH. http://www.tackletour.net/viewtopic.php?t=79678

Wait, I thought you wanted gears that work in the steez 100sh, not the steez a? When I said "zillion main gear", I was referring to the og zillion. I'm confused as to where the steez a came into the conversation.

The og zillion pinion gear worked in a reel I had, after I sanded down the top edge of the pinion to shorten it. You run the risk of the spool pin tapping the pinion during the cast. I had to thin out the 2 washers under the palm side plate bearing in addition to shortening the pinion gear by a few thousandths.

Oh ok, if sanding is involved, its better to just grab the steez sh pinion and og zillion sh main gear. Too bad, tho i was thinking of possibly even trying the 7.9 gears from the og Zillion PE, which are still available on plat.

Ordered the zillion gear and steez pinion, both in 7.1. Now i wonder if it'll make the reel noticeably smoother under load when compared to the original gear set when its new 8-) I did used to have a Zillion SH a while back, and they were amazingly smooth, so hopefully its on par.
