Couple wraps of Teflon tape, then tie direct. Works great!

For me, most my bfs doesn't hold much line so I run straight.
I feel if it's an uneven amount of backing you could throw off the balance of the spool and if it's larger diameter backing then the line peel of mainline could be effected

I go 5 wraps around the spool and finish with a uni knot, holds great and no slippage.
