Cicadas are coming

Here in Maryland and much of the Mid Atlantic we are getting the 17 year locust (Cicadas) in a few months. I was thinking about how this may impact Bass fishing. I see Megabass has a Cicadas imitator called the Siglett.

Anybody have any thoughts?

I'd definitely give it a go. Duo Realis has the Koshinmushi , Shinmushi and Dekashinmushi (three different names depending on size) that I prefer to the Megabass one because it can be soaked better; it has a silicon skirt has produces subtle movement even when the bait is just sitting there like a dry fly.

I know there's a few more options i.e. from Savage Gear but I haven't tried them. All need to be walked rather quickly to get the full effect (looks similar to a Whopper Plopper then), but they create small ripples on slower retrieves that still draws strikes.

Be aware that the hooks on some of these baits are tiny. Like #14 treble hook tiny on the little 1/8oz Koshinmushi. They won't hold if you hook into a decent-sized bass.

I was able to pick up a couple to the Megabass Siglett in the black with red eyes. Based on google that what the 17 yr locust look like. I personally don't remember their color pattern.

I also got a couple of the Savage gear Cicadas. They cost about 1/2 of the Megabass. About the same size and weight, but lack the rattles and finer details of the Megabass.

Should be fun to throw around with the Alphas Air BFS reel with some light line.

Thats awesome! A rod for a specific bait. I thought the 110 special was specific.

I will get one and hopefully it will be here before the Locust are gone for another 17 years. I will be in my 70's, but hopefully still chasing bass.

Sigglet is nice but change the hook for a bigger light wire treble for better hook up ratio. I think I experienced the worst hard bait hook up ratio with sigglet’s stock hook - 0/999999999...

Our Midwestern swarm is still few years away, but during the annual cicadas, ploppers and walkers work great if not better for me.

Interesting to remember that LMB live up to 16 years (smallies and spots up to 6 IIRC), so none of these fish will ever have seen a cicada in their lives

There are cicadas every year where I live, just not the big swarm.

I look forward to fishing for another bait. Let's hope it produces fish. Honestly, sometimes changing things up is good. I fish approximately 20-25 hours a week all summer, so adding something new to my lineup makes me happy. Going to throw more big swimbaits and glides this year also. Last year it was big magnum spoons that were my passion.

Do you find that fishing them fast or slow works best. LIke a popper or a crawler or just pause, jiggle, pause?

That's what--$700 worth of cicada imitations in one box? Not that I don't have (clearing throat) a slight degree of redundancy in my lure collection.
