Very good, inexpensive square bills?

Post by Hogsticker2 » Mon May 09, 2022 1:10 pm

Hey folks. Which productive square bills are we liking that cost less than 9 bucks or so? My purpose will be smallmouth along rip rap - chunk rock banks.

Storm Arashi are my go to bang for your buck squarebill crankbaits. Can be had for cheap and work pretty good. Variety of colors and sizes...silent options too.

They all catch fish, but the Strike King baits have one of the better values. I'm not a big company guy, but they are pretty consistent and don't break the bank. There are so many choices in hardbaits today that you are best choosing a cheap proven manufacturer if you want to keep it simple and have space limitations.
I have many boxes of expensive hardbaits that have never seen water. My bass boat got so full that I was forced to become more simplistic. I made a decision about a decade ago to buy only what I absolutely need when it comes to hardbaits. Most of the paint jobs are for the fisherman. I only carry a shad color and a craw color in most hardbaits. I have caught a lot of fish on the 1.5 and 2.5 KVD squarebills. The only hardbaits that I regularly purchase are replacement baits or baits in an entirely new hardbait category.

Absolutely. Fantastic little bait, be sure to replace the stock hooks though.

Another home run is the Booyah XCS silent squarebill which is the legendary XCalibur XCS reborn.

Yep, their UL squarebill catches anything that swims.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

LC 1.5/2.5s for me. When they dropped down to $6.99 they were one of the best deals on the market for me.

Their flatside squarebills are fish catchers, too, but I'm referring to the CRUL. It's small, but not UL as the name suggests. They remind me of my beloved Strike King 0.5 cranks that were discontinued, though the crul are slightly larger, but still smaller than the 1.0. It's like a .75, if that were a thing. They have good colors, sharp hooks and are very durable.

Yo-Zuri 3DB 1.5 square bill. I have those as well as the older 3DB square bill which is larger with a deeper diving depth. All of the lures in that series are exceptionally good at a killer price point for what you are getting.

Another is Bagley Rattlin' Kill'r B square bill. This is one I use with great results for smallmouth consistently. Not a lot of colors but Tennessee shad, sexy shad, and bluegill are my mainstays, but an honorable mention goes to chartreuse shad.

I like the BPS squarebills for super cheap shallow cranks. They have great action and are super lively even at a crawl. Durability is poor. Hooks are thin but they work. The Berkley Pitbull is better but near the top of your price range. The 1/4 oz one catches everything that swims.
