Retrieve ratio and mid-depth cranks

Post by Johnny A » Thu Dec 22, 2022 6:05 am

I’m finding a higher retrieve ratio (35”-38”) for my mid-depth (6’-12’) to be much more productive and higher average weight.
How ‘bout you?

I like a faster reel for them too. I go for a lot of reaction strikes in that range. A lot of times, I am ripping the bait with my rod and reeling in slack.

Is that for fishing open water or are you still grinding bottom and deflecting off wood while burning them in?

Depends, early season, bottom bumping. Later season, open water, chasing shad.

I've been using a 7:1 30ipt for my cranks. I fish small body cranks with minimal resistance even at 15ft deep and don't see the point of a slow reel unless the bait is rolling on its side from being retrieved too quick. It's nice to see not everyone uses the 5 gear ratio reels.

Wouldn't fast cranking a 30 IPT reel blow out baits like the 3/8 Wiggle Wart?

When I do it, it’s not like ripping back a rattletrap, I do like a scuttling thing, like 7-10 cranks and stop, 7-10 cranks and stop … maybe a sweep back or two with the rod

Isn't 35-38 inches per turn quite a fast reel? That seems more than a 8:1? Doesn't your arm tire out???

Not anymore! That's why I went to 8.5:1!
