Evergreen X Over

Post by goldrod » Sun Jan 01, 2023 2:39 am

anyone else using this lure.. How do you fish it?

I got smacked by a 5 maybe six pounder on 10 test on my evergreen cougar and TDZ R+ set up and the fight was on..
I only get bit on retrieve not jerks or twitches

That's a great fish sir! I thought I was the only one that couldn't get a bite on the Evergreen X-Over trying to work it like a jerkbait. The much smaller Evergreen Super Sledge works great for cold water jerkbait fishing but I've had very little success with the X-Over, maybe I will try to use it more like a crankbait considering it's hybrid design.

Thanks for the tip and catch lots of big bass for us North Country bass anglers who are stuck with "hard water" for another four or five months.

Please have a great day!

Thanks Brother,

This is one silly bait for sure. With Floro I almost always get the line caught in the front hook. I'd say 90 percent of the time to my knowledge and what I have found is I have to crank it or pull it with the rod before trying to to jerk it. When jerking slack line is essential and even more so than with a standardized jerkbait.

Now Cranking it is Totally different and let me tell you they hit it hard
its labeled to run 4-6 feet and I cannot confirm that but in my LIMITED experience I didn't go too heavy with the line. I started at 10 and tried 12lb test but the hooks are super sharp and they remind me of the Megabass Katsuage Out Barb Treble Hooks but they aren't out barb. They will bend on you with tooo much pressure. I am still experimenting with the lure and i cant wait to get on the water with them.

Nice fish! I'd be curious what you have to say about the bait with more time with it. Not much chatter about the bait out there, EG has a video or two on the bait. Unfortunate that the hooks catch the line on the jerks. I picked up two thinking they'd be similar to the MB Flap Slap but I haven't gotten a chance to throw them yet due to winter.

I meant to get a flap slap and forgot about it
Unfortunately for me I have entered a 90 day no fishing purchases that weren’t already in play. This will be a hard 90

Self-imposed hiatus or forced upon you?

On the X Over, are you banging into things on that straight retrieve or just through open water?

Self imposed

I have been cranking in “cold front “ water
Straight stop in go retrieve. Sometimes in grass

I fished this lure today on my extreme mission and was bit EVERY CAST
My retrieval was stop and go. I saw the line JUMP on a lot of hits and just had to reel it in

One word of caution is these hooks are sharp. Like probably the sharpest and stickiest hooks I’ve had. They grab everything and if the fish so much as looks at the lure closely they stick to the face. It’s like thumb wrestling an octopus

Lord willing i will report to you what it’s like on big water. I’ have probably 7 of them and really only have used one. I’ve had no need to change anything
This time I up the line test to 12lb test

How deep would say the X Over runs on 12lb fluoro?

Max depth is 4 feet if I’m not mistaken so I’d say 2.5-3 feet
